Editor’s choice for the awards for children's books at TSUTAYA and TSUTAYA BOOKS nationwide

The announcement and ceremony of the first TSUTAYA Picture Book Awards was held on October 29, 2020.The grand prize winner was "PANDOROBOU (Bread Thief)" (author: Keiko Shibata / publisher: KADOKAWA), and the best-new-talent awardee was "Sorairo no Tegami (Sky-blue Letter)" (author: Hiromi Nagashima / publisher: Iwasaki Shoten).

Our rationale behind the picture book awards is to nurture literary gems that we could read and pass on to our children through generations, 50 years and beyond. We choose our entrees from picture books published within that year. Those books will then be displayed and promoted at TSUTAYA bookstores nationwide. We create opportunities for our customers to discover new and hidden literary gems.

Parents all around the world read books to their children and grandchildren same as those very books that were first read to them by their parents.

TSUTAYA BOOKS Co., Ltd.’s Muratsuji, the organizer of the TSUTAYA Picture Book Awards, said that picture books published more than 50 years ago are still being sold today. This made her realize that parents all around the world read the same books to their children and grandchildren.Muratsuji wants these books to be passed on the same way. These picture books, along with the memories of the ones reading these stories, will be immortalized in the minds of the listeners and become one of their treasured moments. This project was brought to reality through the purpose of bringing such literary gems to more people.
