"We want a store that can shape the lifestyles of young people in Hirakata, Osaka by providing a rich selection of books, records, and videos created in the revolutionary spirit of our decade, the Eighties. We want to locate the store in a convenient place, to furnish it like a loft, and to keep it open every day until 11 p.m."
These were the founding concepts of TSUTAYA BOOKS Hirakata, the first TSUTAYA store to be born. The shop opened for business on March 24, 1983.
Ever since its founding, TSUTAYA has grown its presence as provider of culture to "anyone, anytime, anywhere." In 1999 we opened our flagship store, SHIBUYA TSUTAYA, in front of the Shibuya Hachikomae Intersection, a Tokyo intersection renowned for its throngs of pedestrian traffic. The Shibuya store rents over 700 million DVDs annually and sells more books and magazines than any other store Japan.
In 2011 we restored TSUTAYA BOOKS, our very first store, and opened DAIKANYAMA TSUTAYA BOOKS, a "lifestyle navigator" for Baby Boomers, or what we call the "premium generation." TSUTAYA is still evolving as a lifestyle navigator for today's era.
