Origin of TSUTAYA Name
Our Stores Are Called "TSUTAYA" for Two Reasons
1.Muneaki Masuda, founder of TSUTAYA (currently the president of Culture Convenience Club), had a grandfather whose business also operated under the name "Tsutaya."
2.In deference to Juzaburo Tsutaya, proprietor of wholesale publishing house "Tsutaya" during the Edo Period. Juzaburo is said to have been the promoter for Sharaku, and is considered in contemporary terms to have been a top-class producer of his time.
He is believed to have played a critical role in publicizing much talent.
Although the span between the Edo Period and our times is substantial, the goal of Culture Convenience Club to become the premiere Planning Company for Information Distribution still matches well with the accomplishments of Juzaburo Tsutaya.
