—Record-high sales figures, 107.4% increase in total sales compared to the previous year—
Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. announced that the total retail sales of books and magazines at all 642 TSUTAYA BOOK NETWORK stores (as of the end of March 2011) across its nationwide network of TSUTAYA stores reached 97.4 billion yen for the fiscal year ending March 2011, a record high of 107.4% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, year-on-year sales at existing stores for the year also increased by 100.9% compared to the previous year, following the trend in the fiscal year ending March 2010, marking the second consecutive year of growth.
TSUTAYA's book sales began with the opening of its first store, "TSUTAYA BOOKS Hirakata Ekimae Store," in 1983. Since 1994, it has expanded through franchising as TSUTAYA BOOK NETWORK, increasing the number of stores and sales floor space. Currently, it is one of the largest bookstore chains in Japan, with 642 stores nationwide.
The reasons behind the record-high sales in fiscal year 2011 include a fundamental review of the product lineup based on the use of purchase data, strengthening of magazine subscription services, and initiatives to provide customers with reasons to purchase books, such as using "T-POINT," coupons issued from POS terminals, and emails, which resulted in strong sales at existing stores.
TSUTAYA considers books and magazines to be important in proposing lifestyles to its customers, and in the fiscal year ending March 2012, we will continue to expand our stores and create more fulfilling sales floors.
