—TSUTAYA store user survey reveals 42.9% own a video recording/playback device—

 Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Muneaki Masuda), which operates 1,464 TSUTAYA stores nationwide as of the end of January 2012, conducted an annual mail survey targeting TSUTAYA store users across all prefectures in Japan. The survey, conducted in November of last year (1,509 valid responses), revealed that the ownership rate of Blu-ray playback-compatible devices exceeded 50% for the first time, reaching 55.9%. Furthermore, the ownership rate of Blu-ray recording and playback devices reached 42.4%.

The ownership rate of Blu-ray playback devices was 19.0% in the 2009 survey and 33.7% in the 2010 survey. However, the ownership rate increased significantly in 2011, driven by factors such as the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting in July 2011 and the gradual expansion of the Blu-ray software lineup, centered on foreign films.

TSUTAYA began renting Blu-ray discs nationwide in July 2008, three years prior to the transition to digital terrestrial broadcasting. Furthermore, in Blu-ray software sales, TSUTAYA implemented a "Blu-ray Trade-in Campaign" offering discounts on Blu-ray titles when trading in unneeded DVDs. Additionally, TSUTAYA distributed "Cinema Handbook Blu-ray Edition," a catalog magazine for foreign films, to Blu-ray purchasers and carried out various initiatives to promote the high-definition picture quality of Blu-ray.

Regarding Blu-ray software rentals, monthly rental volume last year grew by 150–200% year-on-year each month, and in July 2011, monthly rental volume exceeded 1 million units for the first time. In sales, the number of Blu-ray titles, including anime and foreign films, is increasingly surpassing DVD sales figures. With rising ownership of Blu-ray playback devices, the use of Blu-ray software is expected to expand further.
