TSUTAYA, which operates 1,475 stores nationwide, will begin renting the documentary film "LIGHT UP NIPPON ~The Miraculous Fireworks that Illuminated Japan~," which depicts the planning and execution of "LIGHT UP NIPPON," an event held last year to commemorate the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and to express hopes for recovery, on DVD at all TSUTAYA stores nationwide and through TSUTAYA DISCAS's home delivery rental service, simultaneously with the film's nationwide theatrical release tomorrow, July 7, 2012. A portion of the rental proceeds will be used to fund "LIGHT UP NIPPON," an event that will continue to be held this year and beyond, with the hope of supporting the further recovery of Tohoku.

Let's revitalize Tohoku. Let's illuminate Japan with light.
Beyond the act of living, and continuing to live, there is always hope and joy.

"LIGHT UP NIPPON" is a project that began with a simple question: "What will happen to the fireworks at the Tokyo Bay Fireworks Festival, which was canceled due to the earthquake?" It was started by an office worker with feelings of remembrance and hope for reconstruction. With the slogan "Energize Tohoku, energize Japan, with fireworks," we succeeded in launching fireworks simultaneously at 10 locations along the Pacific coast of Tohoku on August 11th last year, thanks to the cooperation of many people, and were able to give hope to the victims of the earthquake. "LIGHT UP NIPPON ~The Miraculous Fireworks that Illuminated Japan~" is a passionate and truthful documentary based on 900 hours of footage closely following the passion of one man and the local people who rose up, saying, "We can't keep our heads down forever." The narration is provided by actress Hitomi Kuroki, and Ryuichi Sakamoto participated in the theme song and music, resulting in a miraculous story filled with the thoughts, prayers, hopes, and dreams of many people.
