Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd.'s TSUTAYA stores and TSUTAYA BOOKS stores nationwide reported that total retail sales of books and magazines reached ¥104.7 billion for the fiscal year ended March 2012, representing an increase of 7.4% year-on-year. Furthermore, total retail sales of books and magazines for the April-June 2012 period increased by 8.0% year-on-year.

TSUTAYA's book retail business began with the opening of its first store, "Tsutaya Bookstore Hirakata Ekimae Store," in 1983. Since 1994, the business has expanded through a franchise network under the TSUTAYA BOOKS brand. Since last year, TSUTAYA has begun opening large-scale stores exceeding 5,000 square meters, including super-large bookstores, and has become one of Japan's largest bookstore chains in terms of store count.

Annual sales reached a record high last fiscal year. Contributing factors included strengthening catalog inventory, enhancing magazine subscription programs, and implementing various reading-promotion initiatives for approximately 40 million T-Point members, such as email promotions and POS coupon campaigns utilizing T-Points. As a result, sales remained strong throughout the year. Another contributing factor was TSUTAYA's commitment to creating stores that enhance the enjoyment of selecting and reading books, exemplified by the opening of large-scale stores and Daikanyama TSUTAYA BOOKS in Tokyo.

Beginning in 2012, TSUTAYA will continue opening stores with expanded book sections while providing customers throughout Japan with the enjoyment of selecting and reading books and magazines through its TSUTAYA and TSUTAYA BOOKS stores nationwide.
