-Driven by the BOOK&CAFE format, new large-store openings, and the T-Card program, usage is rising. With major stores in Hakodate, Morioka, and Makuhari, further nationwide expansion is expected this year.-

Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd., Entertainment Business Division (headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), has announced that sales at all TSUTAYA BOOKS stores (742 stores nationwide), which handle books and magazines and are part of the nationwide chain of TSUTAYA and TSUTAYA Bookstores, reached a record high of 113 billion yen (103% increase from the previous year) from January to December 2013. According to our research, this amount is the same as last year, and is the largest total sales amount of any bookstore chain in Japan.

The reasons behind the record-high sales of books and magazines include the expansion of purchases of books and magazines due to the "BOOK & CAFE" style, which has been in place since 2003 and allows customers to carefully select a book over a cup of coffee, as well as the fact that DB marketing through T-CARD has led to an expansion of the book selection and provided opportunities for people to read.

Additionally, the mega-stores that have been opening since 2011 are also performing well, and at the end of last year, we launched a new brand, "TSUTAYA BOOKS," and opened stores in Hakodate and Chiba, as well as a flagship store in Morioka. We expect sales to continue to expand this year and beyond. Going forward, TSUTAYA will pursue the "value of a bookstore" by creating stores where customers can discover new books, the joy of reading, and new lifestyles inspired by books.
