Q: What film do you think will win Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards?
*Response method: Single answer, n=442 (movie lovers only)
This year marks the 86th Academy Awards. The awards ceremony for this world-class entertainment show will be held at 9:00 a.m. on March 3rd, Japan time, but with the Academy Awards ceremony just around the corner, we conducted a ``Survey on the Academy Awards'' among T members.
First, we asked 442 film buffs who responded to the survey and who "really love" movies to make a big prediction about the winner of the Academy Awards for Best Picture. The film chosen as the "favorite," or the most likely candidate, was "Gravity" (31.7%), followed by "The Wolf of Wall Street" (23.3%) as the "contender," or the film predicted to be second only to the favorite. Finally, the films chosen as the ones that could win Best Picture if there was a major upset were "12 Years a Slave" (14.0%) and "American Hustle" (13.3%). Meanwhile, merchandisers (MDs) in charge of rental DVD products at TSUTAYA stores nationwide predicted that "Gravity" would be the favorite, "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" would be contenders, and "The Wolf of Wall Street" would be the longshot. Next, the director of "TSUTAYA's Great Discoveries," a corner that unearths truly interesting films, chose "American Hustle" as the favorite, "12 Years a Slave" as the contender, and "Gravity" as the longshot.
●Comments from rental merchandisers on their predictions for the award
Based on the preliminary competition and nominations, it is unlikely that any films other than "12 Years a Slave," "American Hustle," or "Gravity" will win. Among them, I think the Director's Award will almost certainly be awarded to "Gravity," which won the Director's Guild of America Award. In the history of the Academy Awards, the same film has often won the Best Director and Best Picture awards, but last year there were different winners for the first time in six years, so this year we predict that "Gravity" will also win Best Picture. Golden Globe winners "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle" are also on a roll, so honestly, it wouldn't be surprising if any film won, and this year's Academy Awards are a close race.
Comments from TSUTAYA's Director of Discovery: Reasons for Predicting the Winning of the Award
"American Hustle" won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) this year. In particular, he has won multiple awards in the acting category at the awards, and since it is said that actors make up a high proportion of Academy members, I think this will be a tailwind for him. The film also received the most nominations, with 10. "12 Years a Slave" also won Best Picture (Drama) at this year's Golden Globe Awards. "Gravity" also received the most nominations with 10, second only to "American Hustle," so it may win. However, at the 82nd awards, "Avatar," also in the science fiction genre, was nominated in nine categories, but failed to win Best Picture.
[T Members' Choice! Best of Academy Awards Best Picture]
Q: If you had to choose one Best Picture Oscar from all the previous Oscar winners, which one would it be?
*Response method: Single answer, n=1,099
Next, we asked people to choose one film from all the past Academy Awards that have won Best Picture, and the overwhelming majority of people chose "Titanic" (70th Academy Awards), which won in 1997 and is a three-hour epic that grossed over 20 billion yen at the box office in Japan, as the top choice (26.2%). Coming in second place were the classic film "Gone with the Wind" (7.3%), which won in 1939, and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (76th), the final film in the trilogy that won in 2003 (7.3%). On the other hand, when looking at the results by gender and age, recent award-winning works such as "The King's Speech," "Slumdog Millionaire," and "Argo" ranked highly among those in their teens and twenties, while "Silence of the Lambs" and "Platoon" were chosen by those in their 30s and 40s, while classic works such as "The Godfather," "Ben-Hur," and "The Sound of Music" dominated the top spots among those in their 50s and 60s, resulting in results that showed significant differences in the Best Picture awards for the Academy Awards by gender and age group.

A total of over 38.57 million rentals! Academy Award Best Picture DVD (VHS) rental rankings
Using DB Watch, a data analysis service provided by CCC, we looked at the historical rental DVD (VHS) rankings of films that have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, which have been rented a total of over 38.57 million times. The results were: 1st place "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," 2nd place "Gladiator," 3rd place "Titanic," 4th place "Forrest Gump," and 5th place "Silence of the Lambs." While many of the films that ranked highly in the Best of Academy Awards Best Picture selections by T members were rented, action films such as "Gladiator," "The Departed," and "The Hurt Locker," which were not selected by T members, dominated the top spots.
Additionally, TSUTAYA stores nationwide are currently setting up an Academy Awards corner, displaying past Academy Award winning films and carrying out excitement projects leading up to the awards ceremony (http://tsutaya.jp/academy2014/) is being done.
