- 19 consecutive years of growth. Book sales surpass DVD rentals in annual sales

Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd., which operates Japan's largest bookstore chain, TSUTAYA, recorded a record high of 115.7 billion yen in book and magazine sales at its nationwide TSUTAYA bookstores from April 2013 to March 2014 (up 4.3% from the same period last year).

*Sales amount does not include online sales.

After founding Tsutaya Bookstore Hirakata Ekimae (now TSUTAYA Hirakata Ekimae Main Store), TSUTAYA began franchising its bookstore business in 1994, and this year marks the 20th anniversary of the launch of the franchise business. Sales have been increasing for 19 consecutive years, and this year they surpassed DVD rental sales for the first time.

We will implement product lineups and reading suggestions based on data analysis using T Cards in our stores according to their location, customer trends, and store size, and we are also working to open large bookstores that carry specialized books and rare books. Furthermore, as part of our efforts to pursue the value that only a bookstore can offer, which cannot be found through online shopping or e-books, we offer customers the value of a bookstore as a place to choose books (= lifestyles) that goes beyond just the product lineup. For example, we have created a "discovery-filled sales floor" where customers can discover new lifestyles, and a BOOK & CAFE-style book and magazine sales floor where customers can choose books and magazines before purchasing them while sipping coffee.

We will continue to expand our brick-and-mortar bookstore network, which offers high customer value, through various initiatives such as expanding our stores, creating new sales areas, developing a BOOK & CAFE style, and planning new products, including reprints.
