●40% of people are aware that they have hay fever! Of those, 50% have had hay fever for over 10 years!
Runny nose, stuffy nose, itchy eyes... We are currently in the middle of the difficult pollen season for those with hay fever. In this T Survey, we conducted a "Hay Fever Questionnaire Survey" with 1,793 men and women aged 16 to 69 to find out what measures people with hay fever are taking.
First, we asked respondents whether they had hay fever, and 754 people, or 40%, answered "yes," showing that hay fever is spreading nationwide. On the other hand, 2% of respondents answered, "I used to have hay fever, but as a result of treatment, I no longer have hay fever."
Furthermore, when those who answered "I have hay fever" were asked when they first developed it, 16.1% said they had developed it within the past three years, 29.2% said they had it within the past four to nine years, and 54.7% said they had suffered from hay fever for more than ten years, revealing that the majority of people have had hay fever for more than ten years.
●The measures taken by newcomers who have had hay fever for less than three years are masks (65.6%), eye drops (17.2%), and air purifiers (17.2%).
Among those with hay fever history of 4 to 9 years, the most common hay fever prevention measures are masks (71.6%), prescriptions from the doctor (27.6%), and eye drops (25.9%).
Among veterans with a history of hay fever of 10 years or more, the most common measures to combat it are masks (72.4%), prescriptions from the doctor (37.2%), and eye drops (33.6%).
Next, we investigated whether there were differences in how people dealt with hay fever depending on their history of hay fever. First, we asked people who have been suffering from hay fever for less than three years, and the top coping methods were "masks (65.6%)," "common medicines: eye drops, irrigation (17.2%)," and "air purifiers (17.2%)," showing that people start by taking measures that are close to home. Next, we asked experienced hay fever sufferers who have been suffering from hay fever for 4 to 9 years, and the top answers were "masks (71.6%)," "hospital: prescription (27.6%)," and "general medicines: eye drops, irrigation (25.9%)." Veteran sufferers who have been suffering from hay fever for 10 years or more also gave the same top answers as the experienced sufferers, with the results being "masks (72.4%)," "hospital: prescription (37.2%)," and "general medicines: eye drops, irrigation (33.6%)."We found that the difference between newcomers to hay fever and mid-career/veteran sufferers is whether they go to the hospital or not, and that taking hospital medication is a way of dealing with the problem that only those who have suffered from hay fever for many years use.
Furthermore, the pollen allergy veterans were more likely than new and mid-career pollen sufferers to choose "clean off the pollen before entering the house," "use an air purifier," and "dry clothes indoors," indicating that they are making an effort to "avoid bringing pollen into the house."
The most popular foods and drinks for hay fever prevention are: 1st place - yogurt, 2nd place - sweet tea, 3rd place - natto, 4th place - chocolate, 5th place - banana
During hay fever season, there is endless talk of things like "●● is effective against hay fever!", but when we asked people who suffer from hay fever what foods and drinks are popular as hay fever remedies, the number one choice was "yogurt (30.4%)," which has long been a popular remedy for hay fever. In second place was "Tiancha (13.7%)," a sweet tea that has long been consumed in China as a healthy tea, followed by "Natto (8.1%)," "Chocolate (5.7%)," and "Banana (5.4%)."
On the other hand, more than half (55.3%) of the respondents answered that they "do not (or did not) eat or drink anything to prevent hay fever," indicating that not many people rely on food or drink as a means of dealing with the condition.
●During hay fever season, all you want to do is sleep and stay at home!
What video works does TSUTAYA recommend for those who are stuck at home?
Finally, we asked those who suffer from hay fever what they would like to do during the difficult hay fever season. The overwhelming majority of responses were "sleeping" and "staying at home instead of going out."The next most common answers were "going abroad," "taking a bath or hot spring," and "washing my nose."Other unique answers included "collecting free tissues," "cutting down all the cedar trees," and "getting my eyelashes permed."In general, we found that people with hay fever want to stay at home and relax during the hay fever season, rather than going outside where pollen is flying around.
So, we asked a rental merchandiser at TSUTAYA about the best video titles they would particularly recommend as entertainment for staying at home.
