TSUTAYA Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo / President and COO: Kazuo Nakanishi / hereinafter referred to as "TSUTAYA"), which operates 1,478 TSUTAYA stores nationwide, is offering a "Choose Your 10 Albums / Rent up to 10 Old CD Albums for 1,000 yen (excluding tax)" campaign to offer customers a wide range of music experiences.
We are pleased to announce the ranking of popular artists by age group (number of rentals in July 2016) among customers who have used our "Old CD Album Rental for 1,000 yen (excluding tax) for up to 10 albums."

July's overall ranking for artists borrowed in bulk is [back number]

In the overall TSUTAYA bulk rental ranking, the top three artists were back number, ONE OK ROCK, and Nishino Kana. Looking at the generations, back number ranked in the top 10 for all genders and age groups from teens to 50s, except for men and women over 60.
In addition, ONE OK ROCK ranked highly in all gender and age groups except for men and women over 60 and men in their 50s. In addition, Kana Nishino, who came in third place, is ranked not only among her main fan base of women in their teens to 30s, but also among men in their 40s to 60s and older. It is clear that the music of these popular young artists is expanding its fan base from the children in their teens and twenties to the parents in their forties and fifties. Music may be the catalyst for communication within the family.

Ranking of bulk loans by generation

The July ranking of artists who rented music in bulk revealed some distinctive characteristics for each gender and age group. We will introduce the characteristics of each gender and age group, along with comments from TSUTAYA Music Rental MD.

[back number] and [ONE OK ROCK] ranked 1st and 2nd for both men and women, demonstrating overwhelming support. Furthermore, rock bands such as RADWIMPS and Alexandros ranked within the top 10, showing the popularity of Japanese rock music among the younger generation.

●30s
People in their 30s tend to continue listening to their favorite artists they discovered during their student or youthful days, such as Mr.Children, Ketsumeishi, and Spitz.

●40s
Just like those in their 30s, in addition to artists from their youth such as Southern All Stars, BOOWY, and DREAMS COME TRUE, there appears to be a tendency for teenage girls and women in their 40s to rent artists popular with the middle and high school generation in bulk, with artists such as Arashi and AAA also ranking highly.

●50s
In addition to the popular Japanese artists who are ranked in the overall rankings, artists of the same generation such as Nakajima Miyuki and Southern All Stars are also popular. Also, JUJU, whose highly acclaimed cover album of classic hits from the past, is ranked among both men and women, showing her popularity.

● Over 60 years old
The generational characteristics are most evident. For both men and women, Rakugo came in first place, Nakajima Miyuki came in second, and popular artists from the past such as The Beatles, Teresa Teng, and Inoue Yosui were also popular. Kana Nishino ranked 8th among men aged 60 and over, giving us a glimpse into the breadth of her fan base.

The number of SMAP rentals increased sharply in August!

Following the news of their disbandment on Sunday, August 14th, the number of rentals of SMAP's albums and single CDs has increased sharply in August. In particular, the number of rentals for "pamS," which was released in 2001, increased by 1099% in the seven days after the news was released compared to the seven days before. This result reflects SMAP's enduring popularity and the fans' regret over their disbandment.
