-Annual sales rankings for books, DVDs/Blu-rays, music, and games revealed-

TSUTAYA Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo / President and COO: Kazuo Nakanishi / hereinafter referred to as "TSUTAYA"), which operates TSUTAYA stores nationwide, has compiled data on TSUTAYA users based on usage data from approximately 60 million T-members and is pleased to announce the "2016 TSUTAYA Annual Sales Rankings" for books, DVDs/Blu-rays, music, and games, highlighting the most popular titles of 2016.
We have also started to set up corners in TSUTAYA stores that are linked to the rankings.

■2016 Annual Sales Ranking Summary
・Book sales ranking 1st place: "Genius" / Shintaro Ishihara
・DVD/Blu-ray sales overall ranking: 1st place: "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" / Walt Disney Japan
・Music album sales overall ranking: 1st place: "Are You Happy?" / Arashi
・Music single sales ranking: 1st place: "I seek / Daylight" / Arashi
・Game Sales Overall Ranking 1st Place: "Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3" / Square Enix

The top-ranked book, "Tensai" (Gentosha, released in January 2016), portrays Kakuei Tanaka, a leader with a strong personality, and has garnered support from readers. In addition, various books related to Kakuei Tanaka, centering around this work, also gained popularity. The second place winner, "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" (Futabasha, released in June 2015), is nicknamed "KimiSui" and has attracted attention through word of mouth on social media since its release. The author's work, "I Had the Same Dream Again," won second place in the 2016 Bookstore Awards announced in April, and has been attracting attention and support for a long time. A live-action movie is scheduled to be released in spring 2017, and further excitement is expected. "Convenience Store Woman" won the 155th Akutagawa Prize, and along with the appeal of the work, the author, Sayaka Murata, also drew attention for her unusual background of working part-time at a convenience store.

The first half of 2016 saw the release of the major foreign film "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and the theatrical hit "Zootopia," while the second half saw the release of "Finding Dory," making the foreign film and kids' genres popular. In addition, theatrical productions related to American comics, such as Marvel and DC Comics, are also doing well, and this genre is growing into a staple genre of Western films that is expected to become even more popular in the future. (Music DVDs are excluded from the rankings.)

While artists with loyal fanbases such as Johnny's, idols, and EXILE TRIBE dominate the top rankings for both albums and singles, this year the charts were dominated by "resurgent" artists such as Utada Hikaru and Hi-STANDARD. Additionally, many best-of albums by veteran artists such as Kazumasa Oda and DREAMS COME TRUE also made the list.

Dragon Quest, a Family Computer software that was released on May 27, 1986, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. To mark this memorable 30th anniversary, three Dragon Quest series titles are ranked in the top 20 of the overall model rankings. In particular, "Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3" was popular with a wide range of age groups, from adults to children, and was a best-selling title for a long period of time. Additionally, "Yo-kai Watch," which has been gaining popularity since last year, mainly among younger generations, not only had its latest title "3" but also Yo-kai Sangokushi, which was created in collaboration with the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and three other titles dominated the second to fourth places in the sales rankings.
