January 9th, 2017 is Coming of Age Day. Therefore, in this T Survey, we conducted a "Survey on Lifestyles at 20" targeting 1,601 men and women aged 20 (new adults), 26-28 (Yukitori generation), 40 (new adults 20 years ago), and 60 (new adults 40 years ago) to find out what each person was thinking when they were 20 years old.
First, when asked whether they were/were happy at age 20, the percentage of people who answered "happy/were happy" was 80.3% for 20-year-olds (new adults), 72.3% for 26-28-year-olds (Yutori generation), 76.0% for 40-year-olds (new adults 20 years ago), and 90.3% for 60-year-olds (new adults 40 years ago). Looking at the results by gender, 67.0% of men of the Yutori generation responded that they were "happy," a lower result than the other groups. Next, we asked whether they felt/had felt anxious when they were 20 years old. The percentage of people who answered "I feel/had felt anxious" was 80.0% for 20-year-olds (new adults), 68.8% for 26-28-year-olds (Yutori generation), 45.0% for 40-year-olds (new adults 20 years ago), and 28.3% for 60-year-olds (new adults 40 years ago), showing that the younger the generation, the more people who seem to feel anxious.
●What are you most worried about?
New adults and those aged 26-28 (Yutori generation): 1st place: "The future," 2nd place: "Work/employment," 3rd place: "Love/marriage"
40 years old (new adults 20 years ago): 1st place "Work/employment," 2nd place "love/marriage," 3rd place "future"
Next, we asked what worries they had when they were 20 years old. Among new adults, the top answer was "future" (29.4%), followed by "work/employment" (18.5%) and "romance/marriage" (16.5%). With 90% of respondents saying they felt anxious, the results show that many young people are worried about the future and their own prospects. Furthermore, when comparing the results with similar surveys conducted in the past, it was found that although anxiety about the future is lower compared to last year, young people's worries continue to lean more towards anxiety about the future.
●Who are you dating?
New adults: 30% are "in a relationship"
Age 60 (new adults 40 years ago): 50% were in a relationship
Next, we asked whether they were/were in a relationship when they were 20 years old. Of those who answered "I am/were in a relationship," 31.9% were 20-year-olds (new adults), 40.5% were 26-28 year-olds (Yutori generation), 51.5% were 40-year-olds (new adults 20 years ago), and 50.8% were 60-year-olds (new adults 40 years ago), showing that the rate of relationships among today's younger generations is lower than among 20-year-olds of the past.
●Do you like Japan now?
"I like it"...New adults (90.5%), 26-28 year olds (85.5%), 40 year olds (88.5%), 60 year olds (89.0%)
Next, when asked whether they like Japan today, 90.5% of 20-year-olds (new adults), 85.5% of 26-28-year-olds (Yutori generation), 88.5% of 40-year-olds, and 89.0% of 60-year-olds answered that they like Japan today.
