(Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo / President and COO: Nakanishi Kazuo / hereinafter referred to as "TSUTAYA"), which operates the "TSUTAYA" entertainment store chain nationwide, has begun increasing its inventory by approximately 5,000 units from January 26th in response to the long-running success of the film, which has seen the number of DVD rentals of "Mai Mai Shinko and the Thousand Year Magic," a film directed by Sunao Katabuchi, director of the animated film "In This Corner of the World," which has continued to expand in theaters even three months since its release and swept film awards, increasing approximately nine times* the number of rentals before and after its theatrical release. "In This Corner of the World" is a highly anticipated anime film that began its release through crowdfunding, has been showing in an increasing number of theaters, and has swept up film awards in Japan, including Kinema Junpo. story
Madhouse, the studio behind "Summer Wars," has adapted Takagi Nobuko's autobiographical novel "Mai Mai Shinko" into an anime. Set against the beautiful natural scenery of Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture in the 1950s, this nostalgic story follows the story of a daydreaming girl who forms a friendship with a girl who transfers to her school from the city, and slowly grows as she plays energetically with her friends every day. Hofu Kokuga is a historic town where ruins and old place names remain. Shinko, a third-grader in elementary school, loves to reminisce about the Heian period, which she heard about from her grandfather, and fantasize about what the capital was like and the people it was made of a thousand years ago. One day, a transfer student from Tokyo, Kiiko, arrives. Kiiko seems a bit listless and has a hard time fitting in with her classmates, but the curious Arata takes an interest in her and the two soon become good friends...
