The rainy season has officially arrived in the Kanto region. The humid rainy season will end next month, and with the arrival of summer, department stores and shopping malls will be holding summer fashion sales. So, in this T Survey, we conducted a "Fashion Survey" on 1,600 men and women aged 18 to 69 just before the fashion wave hit.

First, we asked men to select multiple options regarding what they are currently interested in. The most common answer among men was "food" (28.8%), followed by "travel" (25.5%), "cars" (22.1%), "health" (21.6%), and "entertainment" (19.3%). On the other hand, the most common answer among women was "food" (45.0%), just like among men, followed by "travel" (38.6%), "clothes/fashion" (34.4%), "health" (31.0%), and "entertainment" (25.3%). 16.4% of men are interested in "clothes and fashion," while the number of women who are interested is twice as high, indicating that women are more interested in "clothes and fashion" than men. When looking at these results by gender and age group, it was found that people in their teens and twenties have a higher interest in "entertainment" than other generations, and that interest in "health" increases as people get older, both men and women.

●Where do you usually buy your clothes?
1st place: "Shopping Centers/Malls" 2nd place: "Online Shops" 3rd place: "Outlets"

Next, respondents were asked to select multiple options regarding where they usually buy clothes. The top answer was "shopping center/mall" (64.1%), followed by "online shop" (38.8%), "outlet" (30.6%), "department store" (21.5%), and "select shop" (20.5%). In particular, "shopping centers and shopping malls" were the most popular answer across all generations, as they have recently been equipped with parking lots and are easy for families to visit. A notable feature by gender and age group was that "outlets" (37.0%) were the most popular choice for men aged 18-29, "supermarkets" for men aged 50-69, "brand name shops" for women aged 18-29, and "department stores" for women aged 50-69, all of which tended to be popular among all generations. Surprisingly, we also found that one in three people aged 50 to 69, both men and women, purchase clothes from online shops.

●How often do you buy clothes and what is your average monthly purchase amount?
Both men and women purchase it about once every two to three months.
The purchase amount for men was "less than 3,000 yen" and for women it was "5,000 to 10,000 yen."

Next, we asked people who buy their own clothes how often they buy clothes. The top answers, in order of frequency, were "once every 2-3 months" (34.4%), "once every six months" (21.0%), and "once a month" (17.6%), revealing that 30% of people buy clothes every season. When looking at the results by gender, the most common answer for both men and women was "once every two to three months," but the second most common answer for women was "once a month" (23.9%) and the second most common answer for men was "once every six months" (23.3%), showing that women buy clothes more frequently than men. When asked how much they spend on clothes per month, the most common answer among men was "less than 3,000 yen" (30.9%), while the most common answer among women was "5,000 to 10,000 yen" (28.2%), showing that just like the frequency of purchases, women also spend more on clothes than men.

●How long does it take to get rid of clothes after buying them?
30% of men wear it "until it's worn out"
30% of women said they had worked for "about 2-3 years"

We found that women have a higher interest in clothing than men, and that their purchase frequency and spending are also higher in line with their interest. Next, when asked how long they keep the clothes they buy before getting rid of them, the most common answer from men was "until they're worn out" (30.4%), while the most common answer from women was "about 2-3 years" (28.5%). The results show that men and women have very different attitudes towards "clothes they can't wear" and their values regarding "throwing away or letting go of clothes."Looking at the overall picture, the most common answer was "about 2 to 3 years" (24.3%).

●What are the differences in your thinking about shopping?
Men "only buy what they need" (54.9%)
Women say, "Even if a product is trendy, I won't buy it if it doesn't suit my tastes" (63.6%)

While men and women have very different attitudes towards clothing, we asked them to select multiple options regarding their attitudes towards shopping in order to find out whether there were any differences in their attitudes towards shopping itself. The most common answer from men was "I only buy what I need" (54.9%), while for women it was "I won't buy something even if it's trendy if it doesn't suit my taste" (63.6%). It turns out that men are more particular about their shopping habits, while women tend to be more efficient shoppers. Furthermore, many women chose the answers "Shopping is fun" and "Shopping helps me relieve stress." These results show that women seek the enjoyment of shopping and the sense of mental freedom it provides, such as stress relief, and that the act of shopping itself has a psychological impact on women.
