TSUTAYA Co., Ltd.
- Proposing new encounters with stationery and miscellaneous goods that will enrich and delight your life -
TSUTAYA Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo / President and COO: Nakanishi Kazuo / hereinafter referred to as "TSUTAYA") is pleased to announce that the number of stores selling stationery and miscellaneous goods has exceeded 300 (as of the end of September). TSUTAYA will further accelerate the opening of new stationery and miscellaneous goods stores, aiming to have 500 stores stocking the brand by March 2019. Additionally, according to our research, TSUTAYA is currently the largest rental and bookstore chain in Japan in terms of the number of stores that sell stationery and miscellaneous goods.
Changes in the number of stores selling stationery and miscellaneous goods (2011-2017)
TSUTAYA's stationery and miscellaneous goods business began in 2011, and currently the main customer demographic for stationery and miscellaneous goods is women in their 30s and 40s. Additionally, sales of stationery and miscellaneous goods have increased by approximately 110% year-on-year at existing stores for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016, indicating high customer demand for stationery and miscellaneous items.
The main factors behind the achievement of 300 stores include the opening of stores that are suited to the characteristics of the trade area and user attributes, based on an analysis of consumer trends using the T Card database, which has exceeded 64.43 million members (as of the end of September 2017) since its introduction in 2011, and the realization of a detailed product lineup that meets the diverse hobbies and preferences of customers and achieves high customer satisfaction. Another advantage is that the store has been thoroughly designed to offer a comfortable BOOK & CAFE space where customers can relax and enjoy their time, and to offer new "lifestyle suggestions" that create new discoveries with stationery and miscellaneous goods.
For details, please see below for a summary of the five main factors.

・TSUTAYA Sangenjaya Store (Setagaya Ward, Tokyo / Renovated in May 2016)
We have expanded our stationery and miscellaneous goods section, and now stock a wide range of products, from everyday items to cute accessories and luxury stationery that can be used as gifts, all designed to "make your life a little richer and more enjoyable."
3) Utilizing the database to expand the product lineup and original goods that meet customer needs
Currently, we are expanding our lineup of popular items in our database, such as masking tape, an item popular among women, FriXion erasable writing implements that continue to be popular, and fidget spinners, a toy that has become explosively popular overseas. At the same time, we are expanding the range of unique original items available at each store, and Kusamura BOOKS has introduced new original goods that can only be found here, such as tote bags and lunch boxes, in order to create an appealing store.
In addition, some stores are also offering a trial range of bookends (3,240 yen including tax) made from Yoshino cedar, a high-quality wood from Nara Prefecture, and mugs for reading (3,456 yen including tax), as well as other items to help you enjoy reading.
④ Item-linked measures with bookstores
As part of initiatives linked to books and magazines, we have held a "Stationery Girls' Gathering" in conjunction with the "Stationery Girls' Fair," held a "Cat Goods Fair" linked to cat books and magazines themed on cats, which have long been loved by many people, and implemented initiatives linked to specialist magazines on topics such as comics, shogi, and cars.
⑤ Earn T Points by simply showing your T Card when purchasing stationery and miscellaneous goods.
By presenting your T-Card and purchasing eligible stationery and miscellaneous items at participating TSUTAYA stores nationwide, you can earn T-Points, which can be used at a rate of 1 point = 1 yen.
*Some products are not eligible for T points.
TSUTAYA will continue to offer a wide range of low-priced, high-quality stationery and miscellaneous goods to meet the needs of our customers, creating a store where customers can find fun things and what they want, and proposing new lifestyles that are inspired by stationery and miscellaneous goods.
