The year 1997, when the new adults who will celebrate their coming-of-age ceremony on January 8th this year were born, was the year the consumption tax rose from 3% to 5%. The consumption tax is scheduled to increase to 10% next year in 2019, double the rate from 20 years ago. Also in 1997, Namie Amuro's song "CAN YOU CELEBRATE?" was a huge hit, and she has now announced that she will be retiring in September of this year. The world has changed dramatically in the past 20 years, but to gauge the lifestyles and attitudes of young people who will lead the future, we conducted a survey of 603 men and women aged 18 to 20.
First, we asked respondents to select multiple options regarding the tool they use to communicate with friends. The top answer was "LINE" (86.2%), demonstrating that "LINE" has overwhelming support from young people. In second place was "telephone" (43.0%), in third place was "Twitter (direct message)" (30.2%), in fourth place was "SMS", and in fifth place was "email". These results show that with the spread of the internet and smartphones, the means of communicating with friends have become more diverse. Next, we asked respondents to give their own answers about the apps they use most frequently. The top answer was "LINE" (77.9%), which was the same as the communication tool, followed by "Twitter" (50.6%), "Instagram" (30.5%), "Games" (20.7%), and "YouTube" (9.6%). Instagram, which came in third place, was used by more women than men, with 15.2% of men using it and 46.0% of women using it.
●The most worrying thing for 20-year-olds is, 1st place, "The future," 2nd place, "Work/employment" and "money."
Next, respondents were asked to select multiple times what they were currently worried about. Among all 18-20 year olds, the top answer was "money" (50.2%), followed by "the future" (44.9%) and "work/employment" (41.0%). Looking only at 20-year-olds, the top concern was "the future" (52.2%), followed by "work/employment" and "money" (51.2%), showing that people are becoming increasingly anxious about the future as they approach the age when they enter society.

Like cars, overseas travel is a relatively expensive activity. When asked about their level of interest in overseas travel, 14.8% of respondents said they had traveled overseas within the past year, while 58.2% said they had not traveled overseas but would like to in the future, indicating that 70% of young people are involved in overseas travel.
