Since last year, virtual currency has become such a hot topic that you hardly hear about it in the news. To gauge interest in and purchases of virtual currencies, we conducted a survey of 1,501 men and women aged 20 to 69. This survey was conducted immediately after the cryptocurrency leak incident at the cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck.
First, we asked how interested they were in "virtual currencies," and 32.5% answered "very interested" or "somewhat interested." Among these, 43.5% of men in their 20s were interested in virtual currencies. Additionally, 45.6% of people in their 50s and 60s responded that they had "no interest" in virtual currencies, indicating that younger people, especially men, have a higher interest in virtual currencies.
50% of people understand virtual currencies, and one in four want to study them in the future
The most popular study method was "researching the internet," followed by "asking knowledgeable friends and acquaintances" and "buying books."
Next, we asked how much they understood about "virtual currencies." 49.3% answered "I understand it" or "I have a vague understanding," and 25.4% answered "I don't understand it, but I would like to study and understand it." This shows that people's understanding of "virtual currencies" and their intention to understand them are high in proportion to their interest.
When the 382 people who answered "I would like to study and understand" were asked to select multiple methods by which they would like to study, the most common answer was "I will look it up on the Internet" (73.3%), followed by "I will ask a knowledgeable friend or acquaintance" (29.3%), "I will buy a book" (21.5%), "I will watch TV" (21.2%), and "I will ask an expert or someone from a specialist company" (11.3%). Additionally, 3.4% of respondents answered that they would "try trading first."When we looked at these results by gender, we could see that men tended to study by researching on their own, while women tended to study by hearing from others.
Only 3% of people have purchased virtual currency, and one in four people want to purchase it.
The most purchased virtual currencies are 1st place "Bitcoin", 2nd place "Ripple", and 3rd place "Ethereum".
Next, when asked about their intention to purchase "virtual currency," 2.9% of respondents answered "I have already purchased it," 25.2% answered "I have not purchased it until now, but I would like to purchase it in the future," and 71.8% answered "I have not purchased it until now, and I do not intend to purchase it in the future."Despite the Coincheck issue, it was found that one in four people intend to purchase virtual currency.
When 44 people who answered that they purchase "virtual currency" were asked to select multiple answers as to which virtual currency they purchase, the top answer was "Bitcoin" (75.0%), second place was "Ripple" (47.7%), third place was "Ethereum" (40.9%), fourth place was "Bitcoin Cash" (27.3%), and fifth place was "Litecoin" (13.6%).
80% of people think that virtual currencies will not become common in the future
Finally, when asked whether "virtual currency" will become common in the future, only 17.2% of respondents answered "I think it will become a common currency."On the other hand, 67.0% of respondents answered that "it's just a passing fad and I don't think it will become common," while 15.8% answered that "it's not popular and I don't think it will become common at all," meaning that 80% of people think that "virtual currency" will never become common.
