The Obon holidays are approaching soon. When you go back to your hometown or travel domestically or abroad, one thing that can be a headache is what souvenirs to buy. Therefore, in this T Survey, we conducted a survey on "souvenirs" targeting 1,502 men and women aged 18 to 69.
First, when asked whether they buy souvenirs when traveling, 33.4% of people answered that they "always buy" souvenirs for themselves, while 48.5% answered that they "always buy" souvenirs for others, showing that people are more likely to buy souvenirs for others than for themselves. Looking at the results by gender, the percentage of men who answered that they "always buy" souvenirs for themselves was 26.1% and women was 40.7%, while the percentage of men who answered that they "always buy" souvenirs for others was 42.4% and women was 54.5%, with women being more likely to buy souvenirs in both cases. In addition, when asked to give an open-ended response about their budget for souvenirs per trip, the average amount spent for themselves was 3,935 yen, while the average amount spent for souvenirs for others was 4,828 yen, indicating that people spend more on souvenirs for others than on souvenirs for themselves.

The reason why I don't buy souvenirs for anyone other than myself is that "I don't have any problems with my relationships if I don't buy souvenirs."
Next, we asked who they were buying souvenirs for, with the most common answers being "family" (82.2%), "friends" (54.3%), "coworkers/bosses" (48.7%), "relatives" (23.0%), "lovers" (15.6%), and "neighbors" (11.5%). Looking at the results by gender and age group, we found that men aged 30-69 were more likely to buy souvenirs for "coworkers/bosses" than for "friends," while both men and women aged 50-69 were more likely to buy souvenirs for "neighbors" compared to other age groups. On the other hand, when those who answered that they do not buy souvenirs for anyone other than themselves were asked why, the most common answers were "I don't have any problems with my relationships if I don't buy souvenirs" (30.0%), "There's nothing worth buying" (27.1%), "It's a hassle to choose souvenirs" (25.6%), "It's a waste of money to buy souvenirs" (20.7%), "I don't want to spend time choosing souvenirs" (18.2%), and "There's no benefit to giving souvenirs" (16.7%).
●Do you have any problems when buying or giving souvenirs?
1st place: "I'm not sure if ordinary things are good enough" 2nd place: "I can't find anything I'm satisfied with" 3rd place: "I didn't buy enough souvenirs"
Once you've decided to buy souvenirs, you'll need to decide what to buy, how many to buy, and so on. When asked what difficulties they face when purchasing or giving souvenirs, the most common answer was "I'm not sure if something ordinary is okay" (39.2%), followed by "I can't find anything that I'm satisfied with" (27.8%), revealing that 30% of people are particular about the souvenirs themselves. Other reasons given included "I didn't buy enough souvenirs" (25.0%) and "I don't know how many people at work or with friends I should distribute" (23.6%), revealing that one in four people are worried about the number of souvenirs to purchase.
●What points do you pay attention to when choosing souvenirs for others?
1st place: "It's a local specialty or famous product of the destination" 2nd place: "It tastes good (or looks good)" 3rd place: "It has the atmosphere of the destination"
It was found that 30% of people are particular about the souvenirs themselves, but when asked what they consider important when choosing souvenirs for others, over half of the people answered that the most important points are "a local specialty or famous product of the destination" (55.1%) and "tastes good (looks good)" (55.0%). Next in line were "It has the atmosphere of a travel destination" (36.1%), "It has a long expiry date" (35.6%), and "It is individually wrapped" (33.4%). On the other hand, when asked what points they prioritize when choosing a souvenir for themselves, the most common answers were "It tastes good (or looks good)" (55.9%), "It's a local specialty or famous product of the destination" (40.2%), "It's hard to find" (31.6%), "It has the atmosphere of the destination" (28.4%), and "I like the design" (25.4%). This shows that because souvenirs are for themselves, people tend to choose highly unique items such as "it's hard to find" or "I like the design."
