1st place: "Money" 2nd place: "Work/employment" 3rd place: "The future"
January 14th is the last Coming of Age Day of the Heisei era. To investigate the lifestyles of young people, we conducted our annual survey on "Young People's Lifestyles," targeting 1,502 men and women aged 18 to 24.
First, when asked to select multiple times what they are currently worried about, the top answer was "money" (49.0%), followed by "work/employment" (46.1%) and "the future" (43.7%). When narrowing down the respondents to those aged 20 and comparing with those from three years ago, the top answer in 2016 was "The future," in 2017 it was "The future," and in 2018 it was "The future," making "The future" the top answer for three consecutive years. However, this year, among 20-year-olds, the top answer was "Money" (45.0%), followed by "Work/employment" (44.1%) and "The future" (40.8%). More than just vague anxiety about the future, we can see that people are becoming more aware of money, the most important aspect of daily life.
● 50% are opposed to raising the consumption tax
The reasons given are that "it's unclear how the money will be used," "expenses will increase and it will be difficult," and "the economy will worsen."
Speaking of "money," a concern for young people, there is the consumption tax increase that will take effect in October. When asked about their thoughts on the consumption tax increasing to 10%, 48.3% answered that they were "against the tax increase," 21.8% answered that they were "in favor of the tax increase," and 29.9% answered that they were "neither" or "neither," meaning that nearly half of the respondents were opposed to the consumption tax increase. When asked to give their reasons for their reasons in an open-ended response, those opposed to the tax increase tended to respond with "it's unclear how the money will be used," "it will increase expenses and cause hardship," and "it will worsen the economy," while those in favor of the tax increase tended to respond with "it can't be helped" and "it's unavoidable."
What are your thoughts on shopping?
90% of people say, "Even if a product is trendy, I won't buy it if it doesn't suit my taste."
70% prefer to relax at home rather than spending money on entertainment outside
Next, we asked about their attitudes toward shopping. The answers with the highest total number of "very applicable" and "somewhat applicable" were, in order of popularity, "I won't buy a trendy product if it doesn't suit my tastes" (88.5%), "Shopping is fun" (83.6%), "I look for value for money when shopping" (80.2%), "I only buy things I need" (75.7%), and "I prefer relaxing at home rather than spending money on fun outside" (68.9%). While young people today tend to spend wisely and not waste money, it was found that nearly 70% of them have an indoor lifestyle.
●What are you consciously doing?
1st place: "Purchasing refills for shampoo, etc."
2nd place: "Turn off the lights frequently" 3rd place: "Don't leave the water running"
Next, respondents were asked to select multiple times whether they are conscious of actions that could be considered "mottainai" (wasteful). The top answers were "buying refills for shampoo, etc." (58.1%), "turning off lights frequently" (54.8%), "not leaving water running" (53.4%), "separating trash" (42.9%), and "setting air conditioning and heating to the appropriate temperature" (35.5%).
● 40% plan to continue living in their hometown, and 60% have volunteer experience
Finally, when asked how they felt about living in the hometown where they were born and raised, 41.7% answered, "I currently live in my hometown and would like to continue living there in the future," and 15.1% answered, "I have already left my hometown, but would like to return in the future," indicating that more than half of people ultimately choose to live in their hometown.
