Nearly 10 days have passed since the era name changed from "Heisei" to "Reiwa."This T Survey surveyed 1,504 men and women aged 18 to 69 about their attitudes toward the newly established Reiwa era, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the consumption tax increase that will take place after the Reiwa era begins.
The Showa era was said to be a turbulent time, while the Heisei era was said to be a time without war. When asked to give free responses about what they thought the Reiwa era would be like, the most common answers, in order of popularity, were "Reiwa of peace," "Reiwa of change," "Reiwa of transformation," "Reiwa of stability," and "Reiwa of evolution."When asked why they chose "peace," many of those who answered "peace" gave reasons such as "I want a peaceful era" and "I want a world without earthquakes or terrorism." Those who chose "change" gave reasons such as "Advancements in AI are likely to change the way we work and the way society functions," "Various values, including those regarding LGBT, are undergoing major changes," and "I can't help but feel that the times are changing dramatically."
Additionally, when asked whether they felt they wanted to make a fresh start with the change to "Reiwa," 47.6% of people answered "I think so very much" or "I think so somewhat," indicating that nearly half intend to use the change to "Reiwa" as an opportunity to make a fresh start.
