February 16, 2005 is the day the Kyoto Protocol, an initiative to reduce CO2 emissions as a measure against global warming, came into effect. Ahead of February 16th, when an international framework for the environment is set, this T Survey surveyed 1,504 men and women aged 18 to 69 to gauge their awareness of "eco-activities and SDGs."
First, when asked whether they were interested in eco-friendly and environmental issues, 79.3% of respondents answered that they were "interested" or "somewhat interested," indicating that a very large number of people have a high level of awareness of environmental issues. When broken down by gender and age, the largest number of people who answered "I'm interested" were men in their 50s and 60s, while the lowest was women in their teens and 20s, at 22.2%.
With environmental issues such as CO2 reduction beginning to be reported more frequently recently, we asked respondents to rate their understanding of related terms, such as "ethical consumption," "SDGs," "ESG investment," "sustainability," "plastic waste problem," and "food loss." The top answers, with those who answered "I know the details" or "I know the contents to some extent," were "food loss" (74.3%), "plastic waste" (62.0%), "sustainability" (18.2%), "SDGs" (14.6%), "ESG investment" (7.2%), and "ethical consumption" (5.4%). The SDGs were more widely known among people in their teens and twenties, while the plastic waste problem was more widely known among people in their fifties and sixties, revealing a difference in awareness between age groups.
●What do you usually carry with you for eco-friendly activities?
1st place: "Eco bag" 2nd place: "My bottle" 3rd place: "Homemade lunch box"
Recently, eco-friendly products such as "my straws" have appeared, but when asked to select multiple options whether there is anything they carry with them on a regular basis and use for eco-friendly activities, the most popular eco-friendly product was "eco-bags" (75.7%), with over 70% of respondents saying they carry one with them. The second most popular answer was "my own bottle" (47.3%), followed by "homemade lunch box (excluding disposable containers)" (32.3%), "my own chopsticks" (15.2%), and "my own cup" (14.0%). Looking at the results by gender and age, women in their 50s and 60s contributed significantly to eco-activities, with 94.9% using eco-bags and 60.9% using their own bottles. Additionally, nearly half of women in their teens and twenties (48.5%) answered "homemade lunches."On the other hand, 28.5% of men in their teens and twenties answered "none of these apply," indicating that nearly 30% of them do not take any eco-conscious action.
●What do you pay attention to when throwing away household waste?
1st place: "Sorting cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles" 2nd place: "Following the local government's garbage sorting method" 3rd place: "Putting out newspapers, magazines, and cardboard as recyclable waste"
Regarding "garbage disposal," one way of contributing to CO2 reduction in daily life, respondents were asked to select multiple options regarding what they pay attention to when disposing of household garbage. The top answers given by more than half of the respondents were "separating cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles so they can be recycled" (80.0%), "following local government garbage sorting methods" (75.6%), "putting newspapers, magazines, and cardboard boxes in the local recycling bin" (69.5%), "washing dirty containers before throwing them away" (60.3%), and "crushing or breaking down large pieces of garbage" (60.0%). These results show that many people are conscious of and regularly practice easy and straightforward methods for disposing of garbage. In particular, more than half of women in their 50s and 60s answered that they take action in all cases, and it can be seen that, just like eco-friendly activities, they are very conscious about throwing away trash and make it a habit.
●What are you conscious of doing?
1st place: "Don't leave the water running" 2nd place: "Don't leave food uneaten" 3rd place: "Turn off the lights regularly"
When asked to select multiple options what other eco-friendly activities they consciously do besides "throwing out trash," more than half of the respondents answered that they consciously do the following, with the top answers being "not leaving the water running" (70.3%), "not leaving food uneaten" (69.6%), "turning off lights frequently" (66.7%), "buying refillable products" (64.8%), and "using old towels as cleaning cloths" (59.7%). When it comes to these conscious actions, women in their 50s and 60s scored higher than the overall average for most items, with the highest score at 81.6% for "using old towels as rags."Among women in their teens and twenties, the percentage of people who "sell or donate unwanted items on flea market apps" was higher than other age groups at 40.4%, and even among men in their teens and twenties, who are not generally very active in eco-activities, the percentage of people who "try not to leave food uneaten" (68.5%) was high, revealing differences between genders and age groups.
Of the 17 SDGs, the third goal most resonates with all generations: "Good health and well-being"
Sweden's Greta Thunberg has been strongly advocating the need for measures to combat global warming, which has resonated with young people around the world and led to widespread media coverage. When asked which of the 17 goals in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which Greta herself embodies, they most identified with, the top answer was the third goal, "Good health and well-being for all" (14.2%). In second place was the 13th goal, "Take urgent action to combat climate change" (8.6%), in third place was the 16th goal, "Peace, justice and strong institutions" (8.4%), in fourth place was the 2nd goal, "Zero Hunger" (7.8%), and in fifth place was the 11th goal, "Sustainable cities and communities" (6.8%). The results show that the goals people empathize with vary widely, regardless of gender or age, and are based on individual preferences.
●Which companies and brands do you think are conscious of the environment and the SDGs?
1st place: Toyota Motor Corporation, 2nd place: Suntory, 3rd place: Aeon
Finally, when asked to give an open answer as to which companies or brands they think are most conscious of the environment and the SDGs, the top eight choices were Toyota Motor Corporation in first place, Suntory in second place, AEON in third place, Uniqlo in fourth place, Starbucks in fifth place, Muji in sixth place, Kao in seventh place, and Panasonic in eighth place.
