Digest of the parent-child relationship survey

● During the self-restraint period, parents have more time to spend with their children, leading to a harmonious parent-child relationship
Approximately 70% of respondents said they spent more time with their children during the self-restraint period.
Furthermore, after the self-restraint period, nearly 40% of respondents said that their parent-child relationships had become "more harmonious."

Through watching movies and playing games at home, you can realize your child's growth that you didn't know existed and improve your relationship harmony!
The results showed that many people spent more time enjoying "video works" and "board games/card games" with their children during the self-restraint period. In addition, some of the "good things" that came from these experiences included "being able to see my child's growth" and "having more time to communicate with him."

●Some parents and children said they enjoyed the entertainment content together.
In the free response section, many participants mentioned episodes in which they had once again become keenly aware of the gap between generations and the growth of their children through shared experiences through entertainment content.

The new coronavirus continues to rage even in July. Dramatic changes are occurring in lifestyles for both adults and children, including refraining from going out, working from home, school closures, and staggered school attendance.

This has an impact on the time parents and children spend at home. This time, we conducted a survey of people who live with children and investigated the parent-child relationship after the self-restraint period following the declaration of a state of emergency.

Have you spent more time with your children during the self-isolation period? What impact has it had on your parent-child relationship?

Did you spend more time with your children during the self-restraint period? What impact did this have on parent-child relationships?

First, when asked about changes in the amount of time they spend with their children during the self-restraint period, the most common answer was "it has increased" (65.7%), followed by "it has remained the same" (32.1%) and "it has decreased" (2.2%). The increase in "time spent at home" due to the self-restraint on going out during the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the time spent with children for approximately 70% of people.

This is a graph showing how parent-child relationships have changed during the self-restraint period.

When asked how parent-child relationships have changed during this period of self-restraint, the responses were "even more harmonious" (22.9%), "more harmonious than before" (14.6%), "still the same harmonious relationship as before" (57.5%), "less harmonious than before" (2.8%), and "don't want to answer" (2.2%).

Approximately 40% of people feel that spending time at home with their children has made their parent-child relationships more harmonious.

When asked about the entertainment content that people have spent more time enjoying together during the self-isolation period, the answer that received the most responses was "video content (video streaming services)" (33.8%). Next were "Video content (rental DVDs/Blu-rays, etc.)" (26.8%) and "Board games/card games" (24.4%).

When asked about the "good things" that came from enjoying these entertainment activities together, respondents answered "we had more time to communicate" (52.3%), "we got to know what our children were interested in" (41.2%), "we had more common topics to talk about" (41.0%), and "we could see our children growing up" (27.3%).

Furthermore, when comparing the level of parent-child harmony between those who answered that the amount of time they spend enjoying these entertainment activities together has "increased" with those who answered that the amount of time they spend enjoying these activities together has "stayed the same," "decreased," or "never did it," the results showed that those who answered that they have "increased" the amount of parent-child harmony in all three areas: "video streaming services," "rental DVDs/Blu-rays," and "board games/card games," had a higher level of harmony, with over 50% of the total answering that their parents "have become even more harmonious" or "have become harmonious than before."

Even while refraining from going out, many people used their time at home to easily watch videos via streaming or rental, or enjoy playing board games and card games in person. Through these activities, people seemed to have the opportunity to slowly spend time with their children and become aware of their children's interests and growth. As a result, the level of harmony between parents and children may have improved.

"Generation gap in Star Wars" "So you don't have to lose on purpose with Trump"

Finally, we asked participants about episodes they had with their children during the self-isolation period.

The word "self-restraint" has a somewhat stressful connotation, but with lifestyles changing every day, it seems that many people have been spending close time with their children at home through entertainment content such as movies and games.
