Students are the ones who use plastic bags the least! July plastic bag usage after mandatory charges were introduced - Not only is it eco-friendly, but "saving" also discourages plastic bag use
Obon is over and it's already September.
The sweltering heat remains the same this year, but many people have probably spent their summer holidays differently than usual due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. One thing that has changed even in everyday shopping is the mandatory charge for plastic bags!
In order to protect the environment by reducing plastic waste, from July it became mandatory for all stores, including supermarkets, drugstores, and convenience stores, to charge for plastic bags. While efforts are being made to promote the use of eco-bags, there are also voices on social media saying that they are "inconvenient" and that they "want to be made free again." This time, we investigated how "plastic bag usage" has changed, based on data from 50,000 users nationwide of the household accounting app "Recica"!
*Calculations are based on the plastic bag purchase rate registered by users of the household accounting app "Resica."
▽Summary
・Convenience stores saw a sharp increase in the rate of plastic bag purchases by business type in July
- By gender and age, the purchase rate is higher among men, with the purchase rate at convenience stores exceeding 10%.
-By occupation, those who least use plastic bags are students, followed by housewives.
First, we conducted a survey on the purchase rates of plastic bags at supermarkets, drugstores, and convenience stores from January to July 2020, broken down by business type. Until June, when charging for plastic bags became mandatory, supermarkets had the highest rate of plastic bag purchases, followed by drugstores and convenience stores. However, in July, convenience stores had the highest rate of plastic bag purchases (8.7%), followed by supermarkets (6.7%) and drugstores (5.3%).
Since the rate of plastic bag purchases in each business type is less than 10%, it can be assumed that those who use "Reseeka" are not making much use of plastic bags that require a fee.
Among these, at supermarkets and drugstores, where some businesses had been selling plastic bags even before it became mandatory to charge for them, there was no significant change in the purchase rate even in July when it became mandatory, perhaps because many people were preparing eco-bags before going shopping. However, there seems to be a very high demand for plastic bags at convenience stores, where people are not usually accustomed to carrying eco-bags.
Next, we investigated the purchase rate of plastic bags in July in each business category by gender and age group. As a result, in all business types, men were more likely to purchase plastic bags than women. Also, by age group, younger people tended to purchase plastic bags more frequently than seniors. Furthermore, the purchase rate for men in their 30s to 50s who use convenience stores exceeded 10%.
Across all business sectors, women are less likely to purchase plastic bags than men, suggesting that they are using "eco-bags" for environmental and economic reasons.
On the other hand, the high purchase rate of plastic bags at convenience stores among men in their 30s to 50s suggests that plastic bags are useful for small purchases at work or for snacks at lunch or dinner.
Finally, we investigated the rate of plastic bag purchases by occupation in July 2020. The results showed that students had the lowest rate of purchasing plastic bags, followed by housewives and part-time workers.
Although the purchase rate is higher among younger people in the above gender and age groups, we found that students are the occupations that use plastic bags the least. We also found that even full-time housewives, who are professional shoppers, are reluctant to use plastic bags. Even plastic bags that cost about 3 yen each can add up to a lot! Of course, it's eco-friendly, but it also seems that reducing plastic bag use is effective from the perspective of saving money.
