"Spice Purchasing Situation" during the COVID-19 Pandemic
~What can curry roux reveal about your kitchen?~

There are only two months left in this year.
The air has completely changed to autumn, and I can feel the change of seasons.
How are you doing?
Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing, did you know that sales of seasonings are skyrocketing as purchases of preserved foods such as rice and noodles continue to increase?
Furthermore, among all seasonings, spices are the one that has been consistently increasing in per capita purchases! So what kinds of spices are in high demand? And who are buying them?
This time, we conducted a survey on spice purchasing habits based on data from 50,000 users nationwide of the household accounting app "Recica"!

▽Summary
・The number of spice buyers and the number of items purchased per person increased from March to August.
・Among "spices," "curry roux" is by far the top choice compared to the previous year
- In terms of the number of purchases, "women in their 40s" rank first, but in terms of growth rate, "men in their 30s and older" are increasing in purchases.

First, we investigated the number of purchasers of food ingredients and seasonings available at supermarkets, convenience stores, drugstores, etc. from March to August 2020 compared to the same month last year, as well as the number of items purchased per person compared to the same month last year. In terms of number of purchasers, preserved foods such as dried noodles and canned vegetables, as well as seasonings such as "miso," "tsuyu," and "sauce" appeared at the top of the rankings, and it was found that the number of purchasers of "spices" has increased compared to last year since May, when the state of emergency was declared. In addition, the number of spices purchased per person has been increasing since March, and it appears that the number of people purchasing a variety of spices has continued to increase since July.

As people have been refraining from going out during the COVID-19 pandemic and have been limiting the number of times they can go shopping, demand for canned goods and dried noodles that can be stored for a long time has increased. At the same time, as people are cooking more at home, interest has shifted from purchasing condiments such as miso and sauces to spicy spices.

Next, we investigated the ranking of purchases of each food item in the "spices" category in August 2020 (compared to the same month last year). As a result, "curry roux" came in first place compared to the same month last year, far ahead of second-place "bean paste" and third-place "lemon.""Curry powder" also ranked fifth. Furthermore, when analyzing the number of curry roux purchases per 1,000 people, we found that the number had increased significantly since March, when self-restraint measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic began, and that the number remained high even in July and August.

Even with the increased demand for spices due to people refraining from going out, curry, which is easy to make and familiar, seems to have been very popular. As people spend more time at home, they may be having more opportunities to cook meals that require a certain amount of time and effort, rather than just using instant curry, which is a typical example of a convenient meal. Curry is also popular every year for people who have lost their appetite due to summer fatigue, and with more opportunities to cook at home, it seems that more people enjoyed it as a ``summer tradition'' than last year.

Finally, we looked at the ranking of curry roux purchases in August by gender and age group. The results showed that the top three were women in their 40s, followed by women in their 30s and women in their 50s. On the other hand, when we investigated the change (growth rate) in the number of items purchased from August last year to August this year, we found that purchases by men in their 40s were increasing, following those by men in their 30s.

In August, women ranked higher in terms of number of purchases, while men ranked higher in terms of growth rate. The number of curry roux purchases by men in their 30s and 40s has increased significantly since last year, which may be due to the fact that more people are cooking at home, resulting in even more men in the kitchen.
