"GOTO Travel" - Where to go? "Travel Situation During Golden Week and Silver Week" - Travel to Chugoku and Shikoku, including Kagawa and Tottori, is popular amid the COVID-19 pandemic!
Did you go on a trip this year?
Due to the state of emergency declared due to COVID-19, many people across the country refrained from returning home or traveling during this year's Golden Week (GW). On the other hand, there are probably many people who want to go out during Silver Week (SW), the long holiday in September.
The "Go To Travel Campaign" began outside of Tokyo in July, and it feels like things are slowly returning to normal, but how did people's movements actually increase between Golden Week and SW? We investigated using RESICA data.
*In this survey, the standard for "travel" is travel of 100km or more.
(For example, Tokyo to Hakone is not included, but Tokyo to Shizuoka is included. However, if frequent travel between Tokyo and Shizuoka is confirmed outside of Golden Week and SW, it will not be considered "travel."
▽Summary
- Although travel during Golden Week has dropped dramatically, many people are enjoying traveling during the holiday season, just like last year.
・The cities that attracted the most visitors to SW were Tokyo, Osaka, and Aichi. However, it has not attracted as many visitors as last year.
- The growth rate (growth rate) of this year's SW compared to last year was higher due to an increase in travel outside of major metropolitan areas, such as Shikoku and Kyushu.
Although Golden Week in 2020 saw a significant decline, Summer Holidays are expected to recover as usual!
First, we investigated the increase in tourists during Golden Week and Southwestern Japan, comparing 2019 and 2020. During the Golden Week holidays in 2019 (April 29th to May 2nd, 2019), 13% of people traveled, but during the Golden Week holidays in 2020 (April 29th to May 2nd, 2020), the number of people traveling was only 4%, showing a significant decrease in the number of travelers. On the other hand, while the 2019 SW (September 21st to September 23rd, 2019) was 6.1%, it was also found that the 2020 SW (September 19th to September 22nd, 2020) was also 6.1%, showing no change.
The number of tourists during the 2020 Golden Week holiday was dramatically reduced compared to last year, but perhaps due to the influence of the "Go To Travel" campaign, it seems that travel demand is beginning to recover during the 2020 Golden Week holiday.
Tokyo and Osaka attracted the most people during the SW event, but which city saw twice as many tourists as last year?
In this context, we have ranked the top 5 prefectures that attracted the most visitors to SW 2020. Starting with Tokyo in first place, the results were Osaka in second place, Aichi in third place, Fukuoka in fourth place, and Shizuoka in fifth place. On the other hand, the growth rate from last year was 72% for Tokyo, which ranked first, and 91% for Osaka, which ranked second, both of which saw a decrease from the previous year. In addition, we have ranked the top five prefectures with the highest growth rate in tourists from 2019 to 2020. The results were as follows: 1st place Kagawa Prefecture (215%), 2nd place Tottori Prefecture (208%), 3rd place Tokushima Prefecture (200%), 4th place Oita Prefecture (188%), and 5th place Fukui Prefecture (187%).
Although there are a certain number of tourists to major cities as usual, even in South Africa, where tourism has recovered, the number of tourists to densely populated urban areas appears to be decreasing compared to last year.
On the other hand, it was found that the top five prefectures saw nearly twice as many tourists visit SW compared to last year. We also found that regions surrounded by nature, such as mountains and the sea, such as Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu, are becoming increasingly popular travel destinations. In the "new normal" of travel, which involves avoiding the three Cs, there may be an increasing demand for outdoor activities such as fishing and camping.
[Travel to Shikoku] The number of tourists from the Kansai area has increased!
We also analyzed travel to Shikoku by residential area. Among people living in the Kansai area, 18% of those who traveled to Shikoku during the 2019 SW trip, this number increased to 40% during the 2020 SW trip.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people may have avoided long-distance travel and instead enjoyed traveling to tourist spots in their local areas.
