Tsutaya Bookstore Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Tsutaya Bookstore) and its subsidiary Tsutaya Investment (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. have signed a franchise agreement with Shanghai Wanya Cultural Communications Co., Ltd. and opened the Shanghai Shangsheng Xinzuo Tsutaya Bookstore, the second Tsutaya Bookstore in China and the first in Shanghai, on December 24th.
The second store in China, "Shanghai Shangsheng Xinzhou Tsutaya Bookstore," was opened by Shangsheng Xinzhou (English name: Columbia Circle), a bookstore with a history of about 100 years in the rapidly developing city of Shanghai.
Within the site, the Columbia Country Club, a Western-style building that was used as a social gathering place for American expatriates at the time, was renovated while preserving its original interior and opened as Tsutaya Bookstore. Designed by Elliott Hazard in 1924, the building has been selected as one of Shanghai's outstanding historic buildings.
The aim is to create the foundation for the next 100 years in a building that will remain as it was at the time, and in addition to designing a space that allows visitors to experience the fusion of classic and modern, time and space, the concept of "beautiful education" that cultivates sensitivity is also adopted, aiming to create a place in Shanghai that cultivates sensitivity the most.
■ Features of "Shanghai Shangsheng Xinsho Tsutaya Bookstore"
1) A fusion of classic and modern, time and space
The first floor is a sales area with the theme of "Acquiring Intelligence," but the space is designed to harmonize with the store's history, showcasing the fireplace and pillars that remain as they were at the time. In contrast, the second floor will feature a contemporary space for "honing your aesthetic sense." The first floor terrace, set in a pleasant natural environment filled with greenery, can be used as a cafe, while the second floor terrace, overlooking the square, can be used as a bar lounge.
2) Art-focused "beauty education" experience that cultivates sensitivity
At Shanghai Shangsheng Xinzhou Tsutaya Bookstore, we pursue not only the architecture but also the "comfort" that arises from the intersection of the best aspects of space, scenery, people, and functionality. In this comfortable space, we offer a selection of books and miscellaneous goods aimed at Shanghai's intellectually inclined customers, proposing a "lifestyle you'll want."
We will continue to provide value that can only be experienced here as a "bei-iku" experience hub that cultivates the sensibilities of various parts of Shanghai through Art Street, which collects art-related books from all over the world, BIG BOOK, where the books themselves are art, a gallery space that creates opportunities to encounter new art, and handmade crafts by artisans that are so exquisitely art that it is not an exaggeration to say they are art.
To commemorate the opening, the event space will feature Kohei Nawa's sculpture series "Particle," along with visual images from his collection METAMORPHOSIS.
3) A selection of exclusive products that can only be purchased here
The store offers a selection of exclusive products that can only be purchased at Tsutaya Bookstore, including traditional Japanese crafts such as Kaikado, the longest-established manufacturer of handmade tea caddies in Japan, and Tomorrow Fabric, which focuses on traditional Japanese crafts and is handmade by Japanese people, with a renewed focus on the value of kimonos, a Japanese tradition.
Additionally, we will be selling apparel and merchandise by illustrator and artist Yu Nagaba, who is making his first foray into China.
4) Hosting events that can only be experienced in real life
We plan to hold events that can only be enjoyed in a physical store, such as talk shows and meet-and-greet sessions with artists, writers and editors, picture book readings and experiential workshops.
Tsutaya Bookstore will continue to inspire the creativity of people in Japan and China, and aim to become a special place loved by many by offering new reading styles and exciting experiences.
