(1) What are you worried about right now?
For 18-year-olds, the top three concerns were "About the future," "About studies," and "About money."
For 19-year-olds, the top three concerns were "Work and employment," "The future," and "Money."
For 20-year-olds, the top three were "Work and employment," "Money," and "The future."

January 11th is Coming of Age Day. This year, due to the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it is difficult to hold the traditional Coming of Age Ceremony. However, in order to find out how young people view their lifestyles in the new normal era, we conducted a survey on "Young People's Lifestyles" targeting 600 men and women aged 18 to 20.
First, when asked to select multiple times what they are currently worried about, the top answer overall was "the future" (46.3%), followed by "money" (45.7%) and "work/employment" (44.5%). Looking at the results by age, the top answer for 18-year-olds was "the future" (44.5%), but more than half of 19- and 20-year-olds chose "work/employment" (51.0% for both), revealing a strong sense of anxiety about job hunting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, when narrowing down respondents to those aged 20 and comparing over the years since 2016*, the top answer was "About the future" in 2016, "About the future" in 2017, "About the future" in 2018, and "Money" in 2019, while "Work/employment" came in first place for the first time in 2021.

*No survey was conducted in 2020.

(2) What do you want to actively work on in 2021?
1st place: "Academics" 2nd place: "Hobbies" 3rd place: "Part-time jobs"

Next, we asked respondents to select multiple options regarding what they would like to actively pursue or challenge in 2021. More than half of the respondents chose "study" (55.2%), making it the most popular answer, typical of young people. The second most popular answer was "hobbies" (46.7%), followed by "part-time jobs" (43.7%), "obtaining qualifications" (35.8%), and "romance" (31.8%). When looking at the results by gender and age, more than half of women aged 18 to 19 chose "part-time work," while just under 40% of men of the same age chose the same, showing that men and women have different levels of enthusiasm for part-time work. Additionally, as people get older, there is a tendency for them to have a stronger desire to obtain qualifications, and the results show that they are gradually moving away from a student mentality and becoming more aware of employment.

(3) 60% of people have decided what they want to do in the future
What do you use as a reference for finding out what you want to do in the future? 1st place: "The Internet" 2nd place: "Parents/Family" 3rd place: "Friends/Acquaintances"

As anxiety about the future grows due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when asked whether they have decided what they want to do in the future, 60% of people answered "I've decided" or "I've pretty much decided."Looking at the results by age, perhaps because as people get older, the path to what they want to do in the future becomes more realistic, 70% of 18-year-olds and 60% of 19- and 20-year-olds said they have "decided" or "more or less decided."

When asked to select multiple times who or what information source they refer to when searching for or thinking about what they want to do in the future, the top answer was "Internet (other than SNS)" (46.3%), second place was "Parents/family" (35.3%), third place was "Friends/acquaintances" (31.5%), fourth place was "Senior colleagues at school or work" (28.0%), and fifth place was "Books" (24.0%). This shows that when thinking about the future, people consult with people close to them or look up information on the Internet or in books. Looking at the results by age, 18 and 19 year olds were more likely to choose "celebrities/influencers" and "television" than 20 year olds, suggesting that the younger people are, the more idealistic they are about what they want to do in the future.

(4) What kind of lifestyle do you want to have in the future?
30% said, "A rich and easy lifestyle surrounded by things I like and am interested in"

Next, when asked what kind of lifestyle they would like to have in the future, the most common answer was "A rich and easy lifestyle surrounded by the things I like and am interested in" (26.8%). Next were "a lifestyle that focuses time and effort on the things you like and want to do" (16.3%) and "a relaxed, carefree, nature-oriented lifestyle" (15.7%), with lifestyles that focus on doing what you like without any pressure ranking highly. The ambitious "lifestyle of improving oneself, constantly taking on new challenges, and expressing oneself to the world" (14.2%) was not particularly high on the list, while the SDGs and ethically oriented "lifestyle of actively tackling social and local issues and giving back to society by using one's knowledge, experience, and abilities" only came in at 4.7%.

(5) What is your attitude towards shopping?
1st place: "Shopping is fun" 2nd place: "Even if a product is trendy, I won't buy it if it doesn't suit my taste" 3rd place: "I look for value for money when shopping"

Finally, when asked to select multiple answers about their attitudes toward shopping, the top answers were "Shopping is fun" (51.0%), "I won't buy a trendy item if it doesn't suit my taste" (41.5%), "I look for value for money when shopping" (38.3%), "I only buy things I need" (36.2%), and "Shopping helps me relieve stress" (28.3%). It is clear that young people today enjoy shopping, but their shopping style also tends to be wise and avoid waste.
