CCC Marketing Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Kazuhiko Kitamura) and T-Point Japan Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Hiroaki Nagashima) are working on the "School General Election Project," a social project that connects the younger generation, from junior high and high school students to those in their 20s who will be responsible for the future, with politics and society. The project's mission is to convey the voices of the younger generation to the world and create an opportunity for social change.
The School General Election Project will be conducting a campaign to encourage students to think about "selectable uniforms" *1, targeting high school students, junior and senior high school teachers, and parents of junior and senior high school students. June is the season when school uniforms are changed into summer clothes, and naturally awareness of school uniforms increases. As the first part of the campaign, an online survey on "selectable uniforms" was conducted from Monday, April 26, 2021 to Thursday, May 13, 2021, and responses were received from 696 high school students, 200 junior and senior high school teachers, and 371 parents of junior and senior high school students nationwide.
90% of high school students and teachers think it would be better to have a "uniform choice" system, but just under 40% of schools have already implemented it.
First, when asked about their intentions regarding the introduction of a "uniform choice" system at their own school, 89.5% of high school students, 83.0% of parents, and 86.0% of teachers responded that "it would be a good idea," indicating that 80% are in favor of introducing a "uniform choice" system. When asked whether their schools actually have a "uniform choice" system, 38.6% of high school students, 36.0% of teachers, and 21.5% of parents answered "yes," indicating that just under 40% of schools have already introduced a "uniform choice" system.
70% of high school students want to be able to choose their uniforms (60% of male high school students, 80% of female high school students)
Next, when asked whether they would like to use the "uniform selection" system, 10.5% answered "I would definitely like to use it," and 60.8% answered "I would like to use it if the opportunity arose," meaning that 70% of high school students are willing to use the "uniform selection" system. When looking at the results by gender, 63.6% of male high school students answered that they "would definitely like to use it" or "would like to use it if the opportunity arose," while 76.9% of female high school students answered otherwise, indicating that female high school students have a greater need for "uniforms that they can choose."
Reasons for wanting to use "selectable uniforms": female high school students: "weather and mood," male high school students: "fits with the times"
When we asked high school students who answered that they would like to use the "uniform choice" system why, the top reasons given by female high school students were "I want to be able to choose my uniform based on the weather or my mood" (47.9%), "I don't think uniforms should be separated by gender" (41.7%), "It makes it easier for people who are having trouble deciding on a uniform to choose one they like" and "I want to try a different style of uniform" (38.8%). On the other hand, the top reasons given by male high school students were "I think it's in line with the times" (41.7%), "I don't think uniforms should be separated by gender" (31.6%), and "I want to be able to choose my uniform based on the weather or my mood" (30.5%), revealing differences between boys and girls in their reasons for wanting to be able to choose their uniforms.
90% of parents and teachers support the initiative to introduce "uniform choices" for children and students
When parents and teachers were asked what they thought about their children or students taking part in activities calling for the introduction of "uniform choices," 31.0% said they would "support their child's activities," and 60.0% said they were "fine with the activities if that's what the child wants." This shows that 90% of parents and teachers support high school students' activities for "uniform choices."
Comment from Hiroki Ishii, project leader of the "School General Election Project"
Although the "uniform choice" system has been gaining more public recognition in recent years, it cannot be said that there are many schools that have actually implemented the system. The School General Election Project aims to support expanding the range of choices available to students who wish to choose their school uniforms, and those who do not, so that they can enjoy a comfortable and enjoyable school life.
This survey revealed that many parents and teachers would like to support the introduction of a "uniform choice" system and activities led by students to promote the introduction of such a system.
This campaign plans to provide specific support to students who want to take steps towards introducing "uniform choices" at their schools. We hope that teachers, as well as the adult generation who were once students, will take an interest in the idea of "selectable uniforms," and that this will become an opportunity for society as a whole to support young people who take action.
In response to these results, the School General Election Project will hold a consultation session for high school students who wish to consider introducing "uniform choices" as the second part of its campaign to consider the idea of "uniform choices." It also plans to provide a signature form for collecting student opinions and support high school students' activities. We are also planning a collaboration with "TGC teen 2021 Summer," a girls' festival for "Reiwa teens" produced by Tokyo Girls Collection (hereinafter referred to as TGC), which will be held at Shinkiba STUDIO COAST on Tuesday, July 27th.
Through the "School General Election Project," CCC Marketing and T-Point Japan aim to foster "global citizenship" among young people, enabling them to proactively engage in, make decisions about, and take action on social issues, leading to the achievement of SDG Goal 4: "Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all."With our group mission of "UNIQUE DATA, SMALL HAPPY," we aim for "T" to be a presence that "connects people and society," and we will continue to work to create new social value.

・Project details: The "School General Election Project" is based on CCC's founding intention of "providing a base for providing young people with information on new lifestyles," and is a "place" where young people who will be responsible for the future can co-create new discoveries and ideas that will serve as the foundation for living in the future. Aimed at the younger generation, from junior high and high school students to those in their 20s, we will raise themes related to issues affecting the future generation of young people from a wide range of areas, from politics and social issues to higher education and school, and provide neutral information on the issues raised and a forum for deeper dialogue among people of the same generation. By actually "voting" on the website, we will create an opportunity for each junior and senior high school student to take an active role and express their opinions. We also plan to publish articles on note reporting on the voting results that compile the "voices" of junior and senior high school students, as well as interviews with experts, and provide a forum for planning and holding dialogue with opinion leaders.
