-NON STYLE's Akira Ishida: "I was inspired to create a picture book."

Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. Tsutaya Bookstore Company (hereinafter referred to as TSUTAYA) held the second TSUTAYA Picture Book Awards, an award ceremony held on Friday, October 29th, at the TSUTAYA headquarters (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) to announce the winners of the awards. The award was given with the hope that "TSUTAYA will nurture works that will still be read 50 years from now." The Grand Prize winner was "Bread Thief vs. Fake Bread Thief" (author: Shibata Keiko/publisher: KADOKAWA), and the Newcomer's Prize winner was "Come to Our Town" (author: Omomo Yosuke/publisher: Shogakukan).

At the awards ceremony, the top 10 winning titles and the Newcomer Award winner, selected by all staff involved in children's books at TSUTAYA Bookstore, were announced, and the works selected as first place and the Newcomer Award winner were presented with awards. This was the second time the event was being held, and the guest at the awards ceremony was NON STYLE's Akira Ishida, who won the "Ikumen of the Year 2019" award and is currently a father raising three girls. The MC was Taketo, who, as in the previous event, holds numerous childcare-related qualifications, including as a nursery school teacher. The two entertainers livened up the award ceremony by talking about their usual style of reading picture books at home and their thoughts on each work. The winning works will be displayed in a corner in the book section of TSUTAYA stores nationwide from Saturday, October 30th.

■Comment from Akira Ishida of NON STYLE

"What I love about picture books is that they leave a lot of space. He finds visual expressions that cannot be expressed in words, adds his own touches as a father, and sometimes reads to his children while taking action such as running. The number of different types of picture books is increasing, and I learned that there are a wide variety of ways to entertain children, which sparked my desire to create a picture book. "

■Comment from Grand Prize Winner Keiko Shibata

"Thank you very much for this award. I am very surprised to receive this award again this year, just like last year. I wanted to make the bread thief a character who is a bit of a goofball and clumsy, but also has a hard-working side. I would like to continue creating picture books that will be read for a long time and remain in people's hearts. "

□What is the "TSUTAYA Picture Book Award"?
The books were selected from picture books published in the past year by staff in charge of children's books at TSUTAYA bookstores across the country, with the hope of nurturing works at TSUTAYA that will be read for and passed down to their own children and that will still be read 50 years from now. This is a picture book award that aims to promote the winning works by displaying them in stores and developing them into long-selling books in the future.
