--In terms of DVD rentals, works directed by Fukuda Yuichi took the top two spots, while in terms of book sales, literary works took the top two spots! --

Culture Convenience Club Co., Ltd. Tsutaya Bookstore Company (hereinafter referred to as TSUTAYA) will announce the 2021 annual rankings for video, music and comic rentals, as well as the annual rankings for book, video, music and game sales, based on data from TSUTAYA users. (Detailed rankings for each genre are available on the website. )

Sales Ranking

In the book category, the Akutagawa Prize-winning work "Oshi, Moyu" and the Booksellers' Award-winning work "52 Hertz Whales" attracted much attention, with literary works taking the top two spots this year.
"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train" broke the record for the highest box office revenue in Japan's history for the first time in 20 years in terms of DVD/Blu-ray sales, and also took the top spot in retail product sales.
In the gaming category, Nintendo Switch products, which are popular with a wide range of age groups, regardless of gender or age, dominated the top spots, with the top-ranked title, "Monster Hunter Rise," overwhelmingly taking the top spot with sales more than three times that of the second-place title.

Rental Ranking

In the video category, the first and second places went to director Yuichi Fukuda's "New Interpretation of the Three Kingdoms" and "From Today, It's My Turn!! The Movie," making it a remarkable year for director Fukuda, who has shone a bright light on the COVID-19 pandemic with comedy. "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train," which recorded the highest box office revenue in Japan's history, ranked third.
In the music category, YOASOBI's first EP, which became a huge hit after their first appearance at the Kohaku Uta Gassen on New Year's Eve last year, took the overwhelming top spot. Also, in the single category, LiSA's "Homura," the theme song for the record-breaking hit "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train," and "Jujutsu Kaisen," which has become a huge hit in comic rentals since being made into an anime and is the second hit after "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" as a "Weekly Shonen Jump" title, took first place.
