There are only four days left in 2021. We are pleased to announce that this T Survey surveyed 1,502 men and women aged 18 to 69 about the year 2021.
First, we asked respondents to select multiple times what news stories they found most interesting in 2021. The top answer was "Shohei Ohtani winning the MVP award" (38.0%), the second Japanese player to be selected unanimously after Ichiro. In second place was "The fifth wave of COVID-19 infections due to the spread of the Delta strain" (34.4%), which began in late June this year. In third place was "Shohei Ohtani's two-way play in the US Major Leagues" (31.6%), whose pitching and batting skills were also key to his MVP award. In fourth place was "The marriage of Princess Mako and Kei Komuro," who happily filed their marriage registration on October 26th (29.6%). In fifth place was "The marriage of Yui Aragaki and Gen Hoshino," a surprise marriage between two people who co-starred in a drama (28.3%). Among the top five, two news stories related to Shohei Ohtani's success and two news stories about his marriage ranked, indicating that the news of interest in 2021 is trending positively. Looking at the results by age group, among those in their teens and twenties, the top ranking was "Marriage of Yui Aragaki and Gen Hoshino," third place was "Marriage of Princess Mako and Kei Komuro," and fourth place was "Marriage of Masaki Suda and Nana Komatsu," showing that there is a high level of interest in marriage news. On the other hand, among those in their 50s and 60s, "A series of stabbings and arson incidents on board private railway and JR trains" ranked fifth, revealing concern over incidents and accidents.

What were some of the popular things this year that caught your attention? From Ohtani to social issues and sweets!
1st place: "Otani's two-way play" 2nd place: "SDGs" 3rd place: "Silent eating/dinners wearing masks" 4th place: "Maritozzo" 5th place: "Parent gacha"

Next, respondents were asked to select multiple times which of the 16 words and phrases nominated for the 2021 New Word and Buzzword Award were the most popular in 2021. The top choice was Shohei Ohtani, who was also the most interesting news item, with "Ohtani's two-way style" (26.4%). Second place was the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (20.2%), which have recently been a hot topic in various news outlets. Third place was "silent eating/dinners wearing masks" (18.6%), which is considered a basic infection prevention measure. Fourth place was "maritozzo," a specialty of Rome, Italy, a sweet made of brioche dough and filled with plenty of fresh cream (16.6%). Finally, fifth place was "parent gacha" (15.6%), which expresses the idea that "you cannot choose your parents; the circumstances you are born into are a matter of luck."Otani, who ranked first and third in the news of interest category, also took first place in the events and things category, showing that Otani's popularity dominated Japan in 2021. Other topics that made the list include current social issues such as "SDGs" and "parent gacha," "silent eating/eating while wearing a mask" which perfectly describes the COVID-19 pandemic, and the hugely popular dessert "maritozzo," resulting in a wide variety of things and experiences that will be of interest in 2021.

●What is your current obsession this year? 30% of people have found their current obsessions in "training, muscle training, sports," "games and fun," and "watching videos."
The reasons given were "I have more free time now," "I wanted to try something new," and "It's something I've been interested in for a long time."

We asked respondents to give an open-ended question about what their new obsession was in 2021, and 430 people responded in some way to this question, revealing that 30% of them had developed a new obsession in 2021. Among these, the most common "my fads" were, in order of popularity, "training/muscle training/sports," "games/play," "watching videos," "running/jogging/walking," and "cooking," and these were activities that could be started easily and immediately without spending too much money. In addition, when we asked these 430 people why they started their new hobby, the most common answers were "Because I had more free time" (28.1%), "Because I wanted to try something new" (21.2%), and "Because it was something I had been interested in for a long time" (21.2%). This suggests that with the COVID-19 pandemic giving people more free time, they started something they had been interested in and it ended up becoming their new hobby.

● 50% of people are "satisfied with 2021," and 40% "think next year will be a good year."
Younger generations are more satisfied with 2021 and full of expectations for 2022

Next, looking back on 2021, we asked people about their satisfaction with the past year. The total number of people who answered "very satisfied" or "fairly satisfied" was 52.5%, indicating that although the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, 2021 was a satisfying year for nearly half of people. Looking at the results by age group, the younger the age group, the higher the level of satisfaction, with 60% of those in their teens and 20s, 50% of those in their 30s and 40s, and 40% of those in their 50s and 60s responding that they were "very satisfied" or "fairly satisfied."
When asked whether they thought next year would be a good year, 41.0% answered "I think it will be," 14.8% answered "I don't think it will be," and 44.1% answered "I don't know," indicating that 40% have hope for 2022. Looking at the results by age group, the younger the age group, the more hopeful people are for 2022, with 50% of those in their teens and 20s, 40% of those in their 30s and 40s, and 30% of those in their 50s and 60s.

●What new challenge would you like to take on in 2022? Challenges that make you want to take a step forward ranked highly
"Study," "Work/Part-time job," "Training/Muscle training/Sports," "Travel," "Diet"

Finally, we asked respondents to give their own response about the new challenges they would like to take on next year. 609 people responded, and we found that nearly half of them have something they would like to challenge themselves with in 2022. The most common answers from these were "study," "work/part-time job," "training/muscle training/sports," "travel," and "diet."While the trends in 2021 were relatively entertainment-oriented, in 2022, trends aimed at self-improvement and moving up the ranks, such as "study" and "work/part-time job," were cited. Additionally, "training, muscle training, sports" and "dieting" remain popular as they address the lack of exercise caused by spending more time at home, and "travel," which has been difficult to do in recent years, also ranked highly as a hope for what people will do after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides. We found that there is a trend for many people to take a step forward in 2022.
