Nagasaki University, a National University Corporation / CCCMK Holdings Co., Ltd. / CCC Marketing Research Institute / Nagasaki City / NTAS Corporation
-Based on T-Point data, Nagasaki University students plan and propose facilities that will make them want to continue living in Nagasaki City-
The Faculty of Information and Data Science at Nagasaki University (President: Shigeru Kono), a national university corporation, collaborated with the CCC Marketing Research Institute (Director: Minoru Niihashi, hereinafter referred to as "CCC Marketing Research Institute"), a think tank that works together with consumers to solve local issues, at CCCMK Holdings Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yoshinori Takahashi) that aims to solve local issues together with various parties, Nagasaki City (Mayor: Tomihisa Tagami), and NTAS Corporation (Head office: Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture; President and CEO: Masahiko Kamata) to hold an industry-academia collaborative class on the theme of regional revitalization in Nagasaki, based on T-Point data.
In this industry-academia collaborative class, 43 students enrolled in the "Society and Tourism Informatics I" course taught by Associate Professor Ichifuji Yutaka, who specializes in data mining, tourism policy, and tourism big data at the Nagasaki University School of Information and Data Science, will use T-Point data to "plan and propose facilities that will make Generation Z want to continue living in Nagasaki City."Three group work sessions were conducted based on statistically processed T-Point purchasing data, as well as statistically processed data related to boarding and disembarking of the NTAS T-Card, a regional IC card that can be used on Nagasaki buses and taxis. The project presentation was held on Friday, December 16, 2022, and was attended by representatives from CCCMK Holdings, Nagasaki City, and NTAS. The class included lectures on the challenges and initiatives facing Nagasaki City, as well as comments on the project proposals. The project presentations included eight proposals from the unique perspectives of students living in Nagasaki, with the main projects listed below.
A commercial facility catering to young people, offering trendy fashion and gourmet food
- Nagasaki has the second highest number of people moving out in the country. Taking inspiration from Fukuoka, where the population is growing, we propose building a large commercial facility.
・Based on bus usage data, we will create a commercial facility in Hama-no-machi and attract trendy fashion and gourmet stores as tenants, which are of interest to the younger generation leaving Nagasaki.
・This will reduce the outflow of young people from the prefecture, and we can also expect an influx of people from other prefectures into Nagasaki.
An integrated facility where young people can easily gather
-Half of university graduates in Nagasaki City find employment outside the prefecture. The reason for this is that the difference between disposable income and basic expenditures is ranked 45th nationwide in the areas of "employment" and "entertainment facilities."
・Proposing an integrated facility where young people can easily gather
・Providing free consultations on employment information and public service information, which are in high demand among young people, based on lifestyle data, as well as services that allow people to use activity spaces at low cost
・Based on bus usage data, the facility will be constructed in areas such as Nagasaki Station, which are popular among young people, and promotion will be carried out using social media and YouTube.
Free electric bicycle rental service for Generation Z who cannot afford to own a car
・Nagasaki City has challenges with its transportation situation, such as slopes and road width, so we proposed a rental service for electric assist bicycles as a comfortable, convenient and easy means of transportation.
・Using the app, you can use T points for cashless payments
・Rental spots will be set up at bus stops with many bus users, allowing users to rent and return bicycles anywhere 24 hours a day, broadening the scope of their lifestyles, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving the environment.
■Comment from Associate Professor Yutaka Ichifuji
The participants were divided into eight groups and asked to tackle the task of how to use real data to solve everyday problems. In addition to the data provided (bus alighting data, statistical customer DNA data of Nagasaki city residents), I think each team was able to find the data they needed themselves (public statistical data, etc.) and create materials that would convince their proposals. Although the preparation period was short, I think the students were able to learn the importance of formulating hypotheses, organizing data to support them, and logically explaining what effects a proposal will have. We hope to continue offering opportunities like this in the future, so that it will be a valuable experience for students.
■Comment from Ryoko Zaitsu, CCC Marketing Research Institute
As is typical of students from the Department of Information and Data Science, each team took the data seriously and used it effectively to support their current issues and as evidence for their project proposals. Through this workshop, I hope you were able to get a real sense that the "data" you are currently learning about is being used in various areas of society. I hope this experience will help me learn in the future.
■Comment from Mr. Seiichi Higuchi, Information Policy Manager, Nagasaki City
As I listened to everyone's proposals, I felt that the area around Nagasaki Station and Nagasaki Stadium City, which will be transformed by the "Once in a Century Nagasaki" project, have the potential to become the "place" that young people are looking for. At the same time, we realized that this information was not reaching young people. This time the theme was "facilities (hardware)," but I felt that we also needed everyone's perspective on improving the "software," such as how to utilize the hardware and make it attractive to young people. And I realized that the most important thing is for us (adults) to enrich our lives in Nagasaki and show that to the next generation.
■Comment from Mr. Osamu Hachiya, NTUS Corporation
I was impressed by the number of teams that had dug deep into how they presented their ideas, how they prepared their materials, how they formulated hypotheses, and how they conducted their analysis. There were some memorable phrases among them, and I felt that each proposal was the result of careful consideration and time spent by each participant.
Nagasaki University, CCC Marketing Research Institute, Nagasaki City, and NTAS will consider developing the results of this industry-academia collaboration class into initiatives that will further revitalize the Nagasaki region.
Nagasaki University's Faculty of Information and Data Science was established in April 2020 with a student enrollment of 110 and 26 faculty members, based on the Information Engineering course in the Faculty of Engineering. The student enrollment capacity will be increased to 120 in 2023, and a graduate school (master's and doctoral programs) is scheduled to be established in 2024.
Our faculty offers two courses: Information Science (IS) and Data Science (DS). We view the IS course as "making things" and the DS course as "creating events." We liken these two courses to wheels, and have designed the curriculum around the idea of moving forward by rotating both wheels in a balanced manner, like a bicycle.
The ability to learn both knowledge and skills is a unique feature of our faculty that is not found at other universities, and is a major strength of our faculty.
