CCC's founder, Muneaki Masuda (currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of CCC), named the first store, which opened in 1983, "TSUTAYA BOOKS Hirakata" after the name of the family business run by his grandfather. After that, I learned about Tsutaya Juzaburo, a producer who was representative of the Edo period, and followed his example so that TSUTAYA could become a modern producer.
Tsutaya Juzaburo nurtured artists such as Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai, and Toshusai Sharaku, and created woodblock prints to pass on to future generations. For CCC, TSUTAYA is the woodblock prints, and through TSUTAYA, CCC hopes to support contemporary artists and art and culture, as well as become a base for disseminating this to the world and delivering it to consumers of the future.
As part of this collaboration project, a winter campaign for customers is scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at TSUTAYA, TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE, and TSUTAYA BOOKSs nationwide. Starting on Friday, January 17, 2025, some stores will begin selling original merchandise featuring the name of Koshodo*, the company where Tsutaya Juzaburo is said to have shared his many talents with the world.
(※) This was the first bookstore opened by Tsutaya Juzaburo, and later developed into a local book wholesaler.
Tsutaya Juzaburo was a man who brought about major changes in culture and the publishing industry during the Edo period, and his achievements are still highly regarded today. Now, with the start of the broadcast of the historical drama starring him as the main character, CCC will carry on his legacy by carrying out a special project to allow many people to rediscover his charm.
The original products sold at some stores include a wide selection of items inspired by the life and achievements of Tsutaya Jusaburo. These products are an attractive lineup that combines the atmosphere of the Edo period with modern design.
For details on the winter campaign at all stores, the full lineup of original products and stores selling them, and details on the collaboration event related to Tsutaya Juzaburo, please see the press release and the Tsutaya Juzaburo collaboration project page (
