About Tsutaya Juzaburo and TSUTAYA
CCC's founder, Muneaki Masuda (currently Chairman of the Board of Directors of CCC), named the first store, which opened in 1983, "TSUTAYA BOOKS Hirakata" after the name of the family business run by his grandfather. After that, I learned about Tsutaya Juzaburo, a producer who was representative of the Edo period, and followed his example so that TSUTAYA could become a modern producer.
Tsutaya Juzaburo nurtured artists such as Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai, and Toshusai Sharaku, and created woodblock prints to pass on to future generations. For CCC, TSUTAYA is the woodblock prints, and through TSUTAYA, CCC hopes to support contemporary artists and art and culture, as well as become a base for disseminating this to the world and delivering it to consumers of the future.
Tsutaya Juzaburo was a man who brought about great changes in culture and the publishing industry during the Edo period, and his achievements are still highly regarded today. CCC has inherited this spirit and, in order to allow many people to rediscover his charm, has opened a store selling books related to Tsutaya Juzaburo, as well as begun selling original merchandise featuring the name of the company "Koshodo" (※), the name under which Tsutaya Juzaburo is said to have shared his many talents with the world.
