What is the industry-academia-government collaboration lecture aimed at regional revitalization in Nagasaki?
This course, which began in 2022, is intended for students taking the "Social and Tourism Informatics I" course taught by Associate Professor Yutaka Ichifuji (specializing in data mining, tourism policy, and tourism big data) of the Faculty of Information and Data Science. Lifestyle estimates based on V POINT data, magazine purchase data at TSUTAYA, and a large database (https://db.nagasaki-u.ac.jp/about/This lecture focuses on analyzing data such as "Mobile Spatial Statistics" and proposing plans for regional revitalization.
Based on an analysis of the characteristics of Gen Z tourists, we plan "necessary tourist facilities and events for Nagasaki City."
73 students participated in this lecture. Divided into 11 groups, the students participated in five group workshops on the theme of "Planning necessary tourist facilities and events for Nagasaki City." They analyzed the characteristics of Gen Z tourists (18-29 years old) who visit Nagasaki City and formulated plans.
Then, on January 23rd (Friday) and 30th (Friday), 2026, 11 projects were announced that showcased the unique and creative ideas of university students living in Nagasaki. On the day of the event, representatives from CCC Marketing Research Institute, Nagasaki City Hall, N-TAS Co., Ltd., and DMO NAGASAKI also participated. Practical discussions took place regarding regional revitalization in Nagasaki, involving universities, private companies, and government officials. These discussions included providing feedback on the project and holding lectures on the challenges and initiatives facing Nagasaki City.
Nagasaki University, CCC Marketing Research Institute, Nagasaki City, N-TAS Co., Ltd., and DMO NAGASAKI will consider how to develop the results obtained from this industry-academia-government collaborative lecture into further initiatives that will contribute to the revitalization of the Nagasaki region.
Commentary from each team selected as an outstanding team
★NAGASAKI-AGODASHI-FES★ (Team name: Yamachan's)
Event planned with the theme of Nagasaki Prefecture's local product, ago dashi (fish stock).
・The creativity to use "ago dashi" (fish stock), which is generally not associated with Generation Z, as a motif for a project is wonderful.
The presentation was compelling, including data showing regional differences in Gen Z's food preferences, and the data analysis was meticulously conducted throughout. Among the presentation teams, they were particularly well-prepared in their financial planning.
★Fan Activities × Lantern Festival★ (Team Name: MOSE)
Planning: An event utilizing anime content at the Nagasaki Lantern Festival
- It was good that they thoroughly considered the reasons for the low attendance at last year's Lantern Festival, and that they carefully considered the challenges of existing events and identified points where they could improve their own plans (such as measures to encourage visitors to explore the venue and the digitalization of the stamp rally).
- They were able to correctly understand and effectively utilize lifestyle estimates, publicly available statistical data, etc.
★Promoting Content Rhythm★ (Team Name: Sugar-Free Gummy)
Project: A digital stamp rally project utilizing the anime content "Yowamushi Pedal"
- The fact that many people spend money on "fandom activities" is explained using lifestyle estimates. Furthermore, a student survey was conducted, demonstrating proactive data utilization.
・Yowamushi Pedal can utilize existing manhole covers with unique designs in Nagasaki City, and a digital stamp rally is an excellent choice, especially considering its ability to encourage people to explore the area.
Comment from the winning team (Team name: Yamachan's)
This time, our main activity was to proceed while considering whether an event was feasible based on data, and we were very pleased that our team received high praise for this.
I believe the focus on "ago dashi" (a type of broth made from flying fish) in the project, and the detailed calculation of revenue and expenses based on the assumption of actually opening a store, contributed to its positive evaluation. By communicating effectively with the team members and clearly dividing up the tasks, we were able to complete this project.
I believe that skills such as creating documents and speaking in front of others will be necessary even after you enter the workforce. I want to make use of this valuable experience in the future.
Comment from Associate Professor Hiroshi Ichifuji
In this initiative, now in its fourth year, we aimed to further enhance students' data analysis skills by utilizing open data, as well as NTT Docomo's "Mobile Spatial Statistics" data and lifestyle estimates, to propose regional revitalization plans based on objective data.
By using real-world data that students don't usually deal with, their motivation for analysis was very high, and we received many ambitious proposals that placed a strong emphasis on advanced data analysis.
However, on the other hand, there was a tendency for the perspective as a marketing strategy to become somewhat weak.
This session highlighted the need to cultivate proposal skills that integrate sophisticated data analysis with a practical marketing perspective, which will be a key challenge going forward.
■ Overview of the Faculty of Information and Data Science, Nagasaki University
In recent years, data-driven decision-making and the integration of AI into products and services have been attracting attention across all industries and sectors.
Nagasaki University believes that in order to produce human resources who can truly bring concrete value to society, it is necessary to have an educational and research program called "Information and Data Science," which combines "Information Science (IS), which uses ICT technology to turn ideas into reality," and "Data Science (DS), which generates new ideas from data." Therefore, in 2020, the university established the Faculty of Information and Data Science.
This faculty, with its practical concept, is rare in Japan. In addition to lectures on basic and specialized subjects, it actively incorporates practical educational and research programs in collaboration with companies and local governments. Many of our faculty members come from private companies and research institutions, and our diverse faculty provides comprehensive support for students' university life.
