-The most common reason for voting is "because my vote matters"-

CCC Marketing Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Makoto Tashiro) and T-Point Japan Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Keita Sugiura) have launched the "School General Election Project" (https://youthvote.tsite.jp/) and its mission is to convey the voices of the younger generation to the world and create opportunities for social change.

The School General Election Project conducted the 2022 Youth Political Awareness Survey online from Thursday, May 26th to Saturday, May 28th, 2022, targeting young people aged 16 to 29, in preparation for the 26th House of Councillors Election, which began announcement today and will have its voting day on July 10th.We are now pleased to announce the results of this survey.

■60% of young people are not interested in the 2022 House of Councillors election. On the other hand, 30% of people who are not interested in the issue will still vote.
First, we asked whether they were interested in the House of Councillors election to be held this summer. The total number of people who answered "I am interested" or "I am somewhat interested" was 39.7%, while the total number of people who answered "I am not interested" or "I am somewhat not interested" was 60.2%, indicating that more than half of the younger generation are not interested in the House of Councillors election.

Next, those who do not have the right to vote were asked to imagine if they would vote in the House of Councillors election to be held this summer, and to answer the question by imagining what they would do if they did have the right to vote. 54.4% answered "I think I will go," 19.6% answered "I don't think I will go," and 26% answered "I haven't decided yet." This shows that while more than half of young people are not interested, one in two still plan to vote. Furthermore, when we look at these results in terms of whether or not they are interested in the House of Councillors election, we find that 80% of young people who are interested in the election said they will go to vote, while 30% of young people who are not interested in the election said they will go to vote.

■Reasons for voting: "Because my vote counts" and "Because I want to increase the voting rate among young people"
When people who answered that they "plan to vote" in the 2022 House of Councillors election were asked to select multiple reasons for their reasons, the most common answer was "Because I have to value my vote" at 62.1%, followed by "Because I want to increase the voter turnout among young people" at 42.6%, "Because I am interested in politics and elections" at 23.1%, "Because my family members are voting" at 21.1%, and "Because the polling station is in an easy-to-get-to location" at 14.0%. It was clear that many young people recognize that their vote has the potential to change Japanese politics and the future, and are ready to take action.

■ Reasons for not voting: "I'm not interested in politics or elections" and "I don't know who to vote for"
Conversely, when people who answered that they "don't plan to vote" in the 2022 House of Councillors election were asked to select multiple reasons for this, the most common answer was "Because I'm not interested in politics or elections" at 36.4%, followed by "Because I don't know who to vote for" at 28.8%, "Because it doesn't matter who I vote for" at 28.4%, "Because there is no political party or candidate I want to vote for" at 22.5%, and "Because I don't know when the election will be held" at 15.3%. While a certain number of young people are not interested in politics or elections, we also found that low awareness and understanding of political parties and candidates is a factor in why they do not vote.

■As the election approaches, I want to refer to the opinions and information of "political scientists and other experts," "family members," and "people of my generation."
There are 17 days left until the voting day for the 2022 House of Councillors election. Finally, we asked respondents to select multiple people from whom they would like to turn for advice and information as this summer's House of Councillors election approaches. When we narrowed the focus to those who answered that they were interested in the House of Councillors election, the most common answers were "political scientists and other experts" at 41.8%, "family" at 37.2%, and "people of my generation" at 36.5%, showing that there is a need to incorporate the opinions of not only political scientists and other experts, but also family members and people of my generation. [Overview of the "School General Election Project"]
■Project name: School General Election Project

■Project start date: Tuesday, October 13, 2020
■Project details: The "School General Election Project" is based on CCC's founding intention of "providing a base for young people with information on new lifestyles," and is a "place" where young people who will be responsible for the future can co-create new discoveries and ideas that will serve as the foundation for living in the future. Aimed at the younger generation, from junior high and high school students to those in their 20s, we will raise themes related to issues affecting the future generation of young people from a wide range of areas, from politics and social issues to higher education and school, and provide neutral information on the issues raised and a forum for deeper dialogue among people of the same generation. By actually "voting" on the website, we will create an opportunity for each junior and senior high school student to take an active role and express their opinions. We also publish articles on note reporting on voting results that compile the "voices" of junior and senior high school students, as well as interviews with experts, and we also provide a forum for planning and dialogue with opinion leaders.
